What he didn’t say then was he had spent every day since that day looking for me. Vowing that he would find me again if it took the rest of his life.

We walked in step down the hall in silence until he said, “My meeting here should wrap up around 4:30. Then, I’m coming back for you. You better be here. If not, we’re going to have a problem.”

If a heard of horses ran down the hall they wouldn’t have surprised me more. His dominance wasn’t arrogant or off putting. It was so sexy I had to reach out to steady myself against the wall as we walked.

He smelled like winter fresh gum and a masculine spicy cologne and the combination was intoxicating.

By the time we reached the bank of elevators my face was ten-thousand degrees with the heat radiating to the tips of my ears.

“So…” I gestured toward the elevator, “It’s just up here to the third floor then take a right and the conference room will be on the left.”

He gave a quarter turn his head slightly lowered, his blue eyes darting up and down before resting on my face. The ‘ding’ of the elevator made me jump. The doors whooshed open, but he didn’t move. He stared at me on a sniff. His nostrils flaring and my heart raced. Making me feel like a gazelle getting ready to flee from a predator.

Instinctively, I stuck my hand out to stop the elevator doors as they slid closed then banged against my hand opening again.

“Umm, are you going up?” I babbled.

He unbuttoned this suit jacket, slipped his hands into the pockets of hisperfectly fitted trousers and licking his lips and just staring at me until I felt the sweat trickle down the indent of my spine.

“Get in.” His eyes dilated as he tilted his head toward the open elevator.

The tightness in my chest matched the clenching between my legs. I shook my head and told myself no but my legs had their own agenda, and I stepped forward with Adam inches behind me. My knees were ready to give out as he took two long strides to square off in front of me as I turned, dominating my field of vision. The doors slid closed then he reached over to the panel pressing ‘STOP’ instead of the ‘4’. I was in trouble.

Or, in luck.

He leaned in, bracing his hands on either side of my head against the back wall, the sound of Cindy Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun in horrible instrumental elevator music filling the small space. Adam pinned me in the human cage of his body. He took a deep breath, inhaling just above my head. His face a carved mixture of some dark Greek god and a scarred animal.

“We’ve got a problem,” he growled.

“What’s the problem?” My eyes took in his square jawline, the slight shadow of his beard, a long silver scar from somewhere under his starched, perfect white shirt collar running ragged and long up to under his left ear.

“We’ve wasted a lot of time being apart. I don’t like to waste time.” The depth of his voice sent a thousand tiny fingers rap-tap-tapping down low in my belly.

He didn’t smile. His lips were full and his face determined. I felt like he was peeling me apart layer by layer as we stood face to face.

“Me either.” My voice sounded foreign as a roaring desire swirled inside me, eliminating rational thoughts.

What is happening? I don’t know this phenomenon of a man-beast but I want to. So. So. Much.

“Good.” His steel blue eyes dropped to half-mast as he took another a long, deep, then, lit me up with a crooked, half smile showing off the sexiest white teeth I’ve ever seen.

He reached behind his back without taking his eyes off of me and pressed ‘4’ then flatted his hand again on the wall.

We stayed like that until the elevator dinged again and he took his hands from where they caged me, the flaming river of heat between us threatening to carry me away.

“I’m coming for you, like I said. I’m not wasting any more time.”

His voice dripped down into my gooey center as I drew a desperate breath. My belly twisted and a primal drum was beating down low as he brushed the backs of his fingertips against my cheek leaving flames in their wake.

He groaned as he touched me, his jutting brow crumpling in what looked like pain.

He left me heaving as he drew his fingers from my face and brushed them against his lips.

“I’ll be back for you.” He said as the lights seemed to flicker, and the floor felt unsteady. Then, he turned, straightened his spine and walked away without looking back, leaving a cold, empty void in the vacuum of his absence.
