I go into work mode. It’s the only way I’ll ever be able to deal with this situation without losing my mind. “I’ll be there in two minutes.” I turn on my lights and sirens and slam my foot down on the accelerator.
I somehow manage to park and rush into the brewery. Fuck. I’m not even sure I put my goddamn vehicle in park, but I don’t give a fuck right this second. My entire world turned upside down, and it will never be right again until I have my woman back in my arms.
Without her, life isn’t worth living.
Dillon is pacing the back hallway when I blast through the door. “We have it all on video. Calista walked next door to The Golden Mug for a coffee, and Angelo Accardi was waiting for her when she came out of the coffee shop. He pushed her into the back of a black limousine.” Fucking hell. “We’re going to meet Dante Arakas at an empty lot on the outskirts of town. He’s working on finding out what the stupid fuck is up to.” Dante Arakas is the head of the Arakas crime family. He and his nephew run a tight ship that stays off law enforcement’s radar at all costs.
“I’m going to kill the sleazy little bastard,” I mutter to myself as I follow Dillon out to his SUV.
“Get in line. Dante is fucking pissed that Angelo decided to pull this shit in his territory.” I don’t care if the mob boss wants the first crack at the bastard; I’m going to be the one who makes him pay for daring to pull this shit with my girl.
We pull into the deserted parking lot and find a long black limousine idling. After Dillon parks next to the other vehicle, the back door opens, and Dante Arakas steps out and walks over to the sheriff’s cruiser. Dillon and I hop out and stand at the front of the vehicle with the mob boss. “My men have your woman and she’s safe. They should be arriving soon with her.”
Relief nearly brings me to my knees. “Are you sure?” I need to know my girl hasn’t been harmed.
“I’m positive.” The man of few words turns to Dillon. “You don’t have to worry about that little cockroach causing any more trouble in town. He’s been taken care of. Permanently.” I want to know exactly what “taken care of” means but Dillon signals me to keep my fucking mouth shut.
I, of course, ignore my boss. “What does that mean? I need to know that my woman is safe and doesn’t have to look over her shoulder, wondering if some asshole is going to try to kidnap her.”
Dante isn’t accustomed to having his word questioned, but I don’t give a fuck. He turns to me and stares silently for a few minutes before growling, “I assure you, Angelo Accardi will never be a threat to your woman or any other woman ever again.” I guess that’s as close to an answer as I’ll ever get from the mob boss.
My boss steps in. “Thank you, Dante. We appreciate your quick attention to this matter.”
“You’re welcome,” he tells Dillon before turning to address me. “I’ve heard about you. I’m always looking for security if you ever decide to change your career.” He hands me a black business card. “Just in case.”
“Fuck no,” Dillon roars. “You aren’t stealing one of my best deputies.”
“I had to give it a try.” The mob boss smirks.
Another black limousine pulls into the parking lot and stops next to us. When the back door opens and my girl comes rushing out to me, I’m finally able to take a deep breath for the first time since I answered Dillon’s call.
I wrap my arms around her and pull her sweet body against mine. As I lean down and cover her lips with mine, I hear the mob boss clear his throat. “That’s my cue to head home and see what trouble my wife is getting into.”
I kiss my girl to within an inch of her life, ignoring the commotion behind us as the two limousines drive away. I pull back and lay my forehead against hers. “Are you okay?”
“Yes.” She tightens her hold on my waist. “He didn’t have time to lay a hand on me. One second we were driving down the highway headed to Houston, and the next, several black vehicles had us surrounded. Before I knew what was happening, these huge men pulled Angelo from the car and shoved him into a black SUV.” Fucking hell. Knowing the fucker didn’t have time to lay a hand on my girl eases the last band of tension running through me.
“I love you.” I don’t care if my boss is standing a few feet away listening to everything. I need her to know that she’s my world. “I almost lost my goddamn mind when I found out you’d been taken.”
