“Viper knows I’m here. Grim said people are coming.” Her eyes go wide, and her daughter comes out and grips her leg. “You need to take all the vulnerable and hide.”

“I don’t hide,” Tatiana states proudly.

I reach for her belly.

“You need to,” I insist. “Not just for you.”

John approaches, having heard what has just been said. “Lock yourself in the safe house.” He picks up Tamika and hands her to Tatiana.

“I can help, though,” Tatiana argues.

“You can, by keeping my family safe.” He kisses her on the lips, and she nods before she turns back to me.

“Will you get Tanya? She needs to get to safety too, and so do you.”

“I won’t be coming…” She gives me a look, one that I know means she is about to argue. “… but I will get Tanya.” Before I can leave, she captures my hand.

“I can’t lose you twice. Don’t get too close to Viper again.”

I nod and go in search of Tanya. I find her and Melvon sitting at the table, eating when I walk in.

“You need to move. Now. Go to the safe house. Tatiana is waiting for you.” Melvon instantly stands while Tanya sits there, staring at me.

“What? Why?”

“Viper has sent people.” I hear a loud bang outside.

Melvon and I are immediately in motion. He picks up Tanya and is gone before I can say anything else.

When I step outside, about twenty vampires are surrounding the camp. Max’s people are gone, but he is standing there with the wolves and a few of his guards beside him. I watch as a vampire runs at him, and as soon as it’s close enough, his hand shoots out and grasps its neck. The shock on the vampire’s face is evident—he didn’t expect Max to be so fast. Max lifts him in the air and, in the next instant, squeezes him hard, and a loud snap is heard. He throws the vampire behind him, and one of his guards produces a spear and stabs the vampire directly in the heart. The others pause for moment, taking in what just transpired, but I watch on as if it’s all happening in slow motion.

A smile creeps on their faces as John joins us. He stops next to me, checks me over, and strides over to where Max and his guards are standing.

“I wonder if your blood is going to be sweet or sour,” a vampire hisses at Max.

Max says nothing back. He simply waits, looking nothing more than casual. As if he isn’t worried by the vampire’s threatening undertone.

One of the vampires spots me and smiles cruelly. Max glances back and sees me standing a little way off. My plan is if the vampires get past them, I’ll be back here waiting to cut them off from getting to the others. I can’t have them anywhere near my sisters.

So here I will stand and kill anyone who comes near me.

“The king wants you dead,” one of them yells.

“Sounds familiar,” I say, shrugging. “Queen, king.” I smile. “Remember what happened to the last person you served.”

“This one is different. His powers are natural, witch. He will kill you.”

“Enough!” Max shouts, and all eyes turn to him. The vampires don’t know who he is, but I watch as they become angered at the interruption. Vampires think they are above everyone and that we should never talk down to them.

How wrong they are.

They think because we are their food, we should respect them. It’s another reason they serve whoever is in charge.

They like the power.

They have an appetite for it.

Power-hungry scum.

I despise power-hungry people because it always turns out the same way. It goes to their heads, and they think everyone should bow down to them.

Well, that needs to stop.

This all needs to stop.

Right now!

I step forward until I’m in line with Max and John, staring at the vampires. I feel it in my hands as the anger takes hold, and I know without a doubt I’m about to kill them.

“Wings.” Valefar pops up in the middle of the vampires, his smile shining brightly as his gaze fixes on me. He moves closer, and Max places his hand in front to stop him. Valefar simply smiles and shakes his head. “I’ve come to collect on my deal, Wings. I’ve given you enough time.”

“In case you didn’t notice, we are in a bit of a predicament right now,” I say to him. The vampires all glare as Valefar checks around before he focuses back on Max.

“He can handle them. They will all be dead before they can even blink.” And before I can reply, Valefar grabs my arm, then suddenly we are no longer standing on the grass in front of the vampires.

“Where are we?” I demand.

“We are in the in-between.”

“This is where he takes me,” I whisper as I see the ocean. The night sky is bright and filled with stars.
