He pulls me in for one hell of a long kiss that makes me weak in the knees and then runs out, making sure to grab his personal Nerf gun with thirty rounds in it. They all shout and take off running from him. It’s wonderful. Ten minutes later and I don’t see Samuel yet, so I go upstairs to check on him. All of the Legos are picked up and taken from the hallway, so I go to his room. He’s sitting at his desk, drawing.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes, mommy.” He gets up a second later and brings me the paper. It’s a card. “I’m sorry.” I hug my baby and cry.
“This is so sweet of you, my baby boy. I love you. Now, why don’t you go downstairs and play with the other boys? Although I have to warn you; Daddy’s joined and he’s ready for war.”
“He can’t catch me.” He darts from my arms, running out of the room.
“Walk down those stairs,” I holler and then stand up. Suddenly, I’m a little lightheaded from standing too quickly. I know why. Tonight, Nick is about to be surprised because, in seven months, he’ll have another Nerf warrior gunning for him.
