“Let me call her then,” she says, very giddy, clearly not just looking for an excuse to turn down my date.

She dials up her grandmother, and walks into the other room to have a conversation with her. I watch her wonderful ass bounce as she does so, and enjoy my coffee staring her way.

It’s not long before she returns. “She says she hasn’t had Chinese in awhile. She wants a full sized General Tso’s and a Pu Pu platter, along with some sugar donuts. The ones they deep fry in their oil and dump a load of sugar on.”

“All that, huh? Just for her?”

“She doesn’t get to have Chinese often. She’s reclusive and doesn’t head into town. She has her groceries delivered, even.”

“If that’s what I need to get to make you feel better about postponing stew, she gots it. I even got a nice little thermal bag to keep it in.”

“Aren’t you the prepared little delivery boy?” She hoists up her bag. “Well, I’m ready whenever you are. You have to take me home before you can pick me up for dinner, after all.”

I nod. I didn’t want to split up my time with her, but Red’s a girl worth waiting for.

We head out into the snow, and she starts toward my truck. “Nope. We’re not taking that.”

“Huh?”

“Snow’s too thick. Just asking for trouble with that thing.”

“Then how are we going to get back? Are you just going to escort me walking?”

I gesture over toward my prized snowmobile.

“That thing?”

I nod. “Best way to get around when winter is at its worst.”

“If... if you’re sure. I’ve never rode one of those things before.”

I throw my leg over, and turn its engine. “It’s as safe as you’re going to get when you’re traveling through a frozen hell.”

She approaches slowly, still unsure. As a city girl, I’m not surprised she’s completely oblivious to snow mobiles. She’s probably seen one on TV and those are always shown in dangerous daring chases or whatever, not as a useful tool to get from point A to point B.

“Come on now. I promise it’s safer than walking, and that no wolf is going to be able to catch us.”

She smirks as she stows her groceries in the little compartment for it, and climbs on behind me, wrapping her arms around me. The little perks in life, I guess.

We pull out onto the trail, and I head to the address that Red fed me. It’s deeper in the mountains, and I’m kind of surprised Red was walking the whole distance. As harsh as it was though, I ain’t lying. Cars and trucks would struggle unless they were absolutely prepared for the worst.

What I’m not expecting is that the ‘cabin’ I approach is more like a mansion than anything else. The place is huge, and I don’t think it was here until a few years ago. “Your.... your grandmother lives here?” I say, surprised as the snowmobile comes to a stop in front of the home that has to cost millions of dollars.

“Uh huh. She moved up here about a year ago. Wanted some place remote to continue her writing. She’s a bit of a recluse, but she’s always loved Linesworth. This is her compromise home.”

“Well she’s certainly not going to get bothered too often if she’s way up here.”

I turn the engine down and help her off it.

“Not too terrifying I hope?”

“Hardly. I knew you wouldn’t let anything happen to me, Hood. In fact, it was a bit of fun.”

I laugh. “Maybe I’ll take you on a proper joyride sometime.”

“I’d like that.”

We go up to the front door of the mansion-cabin. “Well then, here you go. I’ll be back at seven-thirty to pick you up for dinner, complete with your Grandmother’s Chinese feast.”

Although if she can afford a place like this I wonder why she can’t bribe them to deliver out here anyway.

“Can’t wait, Hood. Thanks for trying to do this right.”

I rub my chin. “You know, if we head back down into Linesworth before five, we can get to the courthouse and get hitched before they close.”

She bursts into laughter. Oh, how I’m growing to love that sound. “You’re literally insane, you know that right?”

“Insanely in love with you, babe.”

She plants a kiss on my lips. It’s slightly above a friendly peck in intensity, but I think I love it all the same.

Red then disappears behind the door, leaving me alone, all of the sudden wanting for her, even if it’s only been a second without her in my presence.

My head in the clouds, I head back down to my snowmobile, my thoughts filled with her and everything I want to do to her, and everything I want to do with her.

This has to be it, right? The passion that Baker and Rainier talked about. The need. The desire. If this ain’t it, I’m kinda afraid of what is.
