Regardless of how Cash had manipulated his thoughts, made himself believe by getting on Dev’s good side he’d have better access to the club, Dev was a decidedly unwanted distraction. It didn’t matter. He’d spent hours today convincing himself the true threat lay beyond the man known as Devilman.
A laughable summation. The biker’s chosen name had evil spelled inside it.
But the facts remained the same. By building a relationship with Dev, Cash could get closer to the club and its members. If he planned his strategies correctly, those biker informants, the law enforcement officers, and special agents being paid under the table by the bike club may reveal themselves.
The plan was solid. Other undercover agents performed in exactly the same manner every day, all across the country. This was nothing new even if it was new to him.
Cash kept his facial expressions neutral and waited.
His innate sense of honesty required he speak the truth, but his gut needed a reasonable mind’s clarity before he did something stupid. Like blow this entire operation wide open on nothing more than his deep desire to have Dev be the hero and not a casualty of the potential war bearing down on top of this unsuspecting club.
The AG’s face hardened. “Are you sure Devin Fox is the best mole for this job? He seems volatile at best.”
Collins shook her head at the AG. She agreed with Cash.
If they could land Dev as an informant, the case would solve itself. Dev had access to everyone and everything. “It’s hard to believe this much ineptness can happen in one case. Someone’s keeping us at a distance. Allow me the tools to find the person or people responsible. That’s why you assigned me. I have a hundred percent closure rate. Devin can find our answers.”
He’d given his oath of loyalty and allegiance to the United States government. But what if Dev was the mastermind behind the clusterfuck of this case. He was smart enough to be the root of the problems, no matter how he portrayed himself to the world.
No…Cash didn’t think so.
How were Cash’s lines already so blurred where Dev was concerned?
His ass answered his question, still feeling the use from their love making.
Love making. He hadn’t let himself think the words love until a couple of hours ago as he built this report, wanting to do everything in his power to shield Dev from any future fallout.
Since then, every remembered touch was exactly what it felt like in real time: a caress, a gentle guidance, a reverence to the other.
Focus.
Jesus, Cash. Focus.
Not.
The.
Time.
Close this argument. Bring it home. Get the approvals.
“Devin Fox is my way into the club. There’s no better in. He should’ve been used in this way from the beginning. The Disciples charter states clearly that he’s taking over the entire nationwide club when his father steps down. We have intel on every club member. There isn’t another leader in the band of misfits. Certainly no one capable of washing cash and churning large amounts of illegal drugs through the streets. The only two patched members who have any sort of reasonable thought processes are Devin Fox and Keyes Dixon. I do question Dixon’s motives more and more the further I dig through his file. The idea that he has a secret relationship with the Speaker of the House’s son. What does that even look like?”
Cash paused, letting the influential connection sink in.
Politically, if this case involved Speaker Pierce, the AG had better have all his facts clearly supported or his career was over.
Was there anything more than the ridiculousness of someone like Keyes Dixon paired with the wealthy, rebel child, Alec Pierce? Maybe dropping the breadcrumbs might buy time to pull this all together, to know better what he faced.
“I also have a small team forming. My handler, Joe, and Shanna Fox. They’ve all privately expressed their concerns with how the case is progressing. I’m testing their trustworthiness now, but I believe I can draw them in under the AG’s special team’s umbrella. We’ll see, but to the rest of the Dallas DEA, it’ll only look like I managed my way into becoming Dev’s boyfriend.”
“You’re walking a thin line,” Collins said.
“Nothing new there,” he replied truthfully.
The astute stare of the AG held Cash’s full attention. The man was so damned hard to read.
The silence extended.
He had learned a long time ago to hold his tongue. Whoever spoke first lost the negotiations, especially when dealing with anyone in the government.
Seconds lapped into a minute.
The minute became two. Cash didn’t budge.
“I can see where you’re gaining Devilman’s trust. He’s reckless…” the AG started. Cash nodded. “The largest motorcycle club in the country is moving billions of dollars of illegal drugs through our streets. You must be certain before you act. We can’t get this wrong.” The AG’s eyes lifted to Cash, again assessing him as if that wasn’t perfectly clear.
