Will I need to kill him?

I walked over and stood next to her.

Fatou frowned. “She’s not a weapon.”

“Look at them.” Her father gestured to the shackled vampires. “They still haven’t recovered from her screams. It seems her voice can twist their insides into nothing.”

Fatou shook her head. “Part of me. . .hoped that one day I could. . .get your forgiveness and even your love, but. . .”

He scowled at her.

“Now, I don’t need it.” She looked at Jade and then me. “I have all the real love I will ever need. Bye, Father.”

She turned around and walked away.

I followed.

“You can go,” her father called back. “But, Jade will not leave this castle.”

Fury bubbled in me. I stopped and turned around. “What did you say?”

“You should have stayed away, Fatou. I prayed that you would die on your mission.”

Tears left Fatou’s eyes.

“Perhaps, God doesn’t listen to my prayers. When your mother was pregnant, I wanted a son.” He shook his head. “I didn’t complain when I got you. I should have. Instead, I did my best to raise you to rule, and you threw it all away for lustful creatures.”

Fatou returned to me and tapped my arm. “Let’s go, Azar.”

“No.” I growled. “All problems must be solved today. I am ready for our happy ending.”

“Yes.” Her father clapped. “Please, go for that happy ending, but the child stays. I need an heir and she will rule. Jade has power.”

Fatou bared those fangs. “I will not leave without her!”

“Fangs?” Her father’s face twisted in disgust. “You’ve turned into one of those blood-sucking monsters.”

Fatou pursed her lips, covering the fangs.

A dark laugh left him. “You wanted my forgiveness? My love? You will never get it. . . monster.”

Growling, I rushed for him.

Fatou yelled, “Azar, don’t!”

But, it was too late. His men couldn’t stop me. Each time they charged my way, I slapped them back. In seconds, I had my hands wrapped around his neck.

Monster?

His crown fell to the ground.

You will die today.

He struggled against my grip.

I tightened my hold, doing my best to choke all the life out of him.

Leave. Die.

“Azar, stop!” Fatou cried. “Please!”

All of our enemies die today. No more.

Then, a glowing bright light filled the space.

Next, the air filled with the sweet smell of summer flowers, the sun’s heat, and the perfumed breath of life.

And suddenly, all of the men gasped and fell to their knees.

One screeched.

A deep familiar voice sounded behind me. “Azar, let the king go.”

What?

Chapter 27

My Happily Ever After

Azar

Who appeared?

I turned my head.

The angel, Raphael greeted my eyes.

Shock hit me.

I let go of the King’s neck.

Gasping on air, he collapsed to the ground.

Speechless, I stared back at Raphael in shock.

Slowly flapping his white gold-tipped wings, he hovered four feet above the ground, floating over the tortured vampires.

His platinum blond hair was tied up into a ponytail.

Raphael wore the same white pants and shirt that he had on when he came to my cell. At least this time, he had on shoes. To my surprise, they were sneakers with dirt smudged tips as if he had just left the basketball court to deal with my problem.

A halo of golden light radiated from his body, and his skin sparkled with gold dust.

The angel curved his lips into a smile. “You have been doing so well, Azar. Do not turn back onto the dark path.”

I sighed. “This man insulted the love of my life. Surely, God would be okay with my killing him.”

Raphael’s smile shifted to a frown.

“I shouldn’t be violent with him?”

Raphael shook his head.

“What about. . .if I just. . .kick him a few times in the ass?”

Raphael stared and did not blink.

Fatou’s father mumbled from the floor, “A-a demon that talks to a-angels? What is this?”

“Alright.” Sighing, I stepped back from Fatou’s father. “I will not hurt him.”

Raphael nodded. The warm and inviting smile returned. “Does this decision not bring joy to your heart?”

I groaned in annoyance.

“That is okay, Azar. Sometimes the slowest path is the fastest.” Raphael turned his view to the vampires. “Little Jade has been blessed with a great gift.”

Nervous that the angel would try to take Jade too, I hurried back to them.

Raphael followed my movement. His smile deepened. “You two will live in Paradise forever.”

I tensed.

He heard our conversation earlier.

One of the vampires loudly groaned in pain.

Raphael moved his view back to them, and with a gently flick of his hand. The vampires turned into black dust on the ground. It was so fast, I barely caught it. First, they were there—twisting and turning in agony. Next, they were nothing but piles of dark ground powder.

Raphael directed his view to the King. “Azar, you must understand that one day Fatou will still need her father’s forgiveness and love. Therefore, killing him, would not improve anything.”

I looked back at her.

Stunned, Fatou stared at the angel.
