Blood coins were red, square, and no bigger than a human penny.
When the sun was out, they weighed heavy and were hot, almost burning my fingers. When a full moon was out, they cooled down and glowed in the dark.
Elves created blood coins. Few knew the entire process. All I’d learned was that the elves had to cut their hands and release a stream of blood to create the coins. Therefore, blood coins were difficult to come by and the most sought-after object in our world.
And Adae wanted me to work off millions of them.
Slowly, Azar turned around. Chocolate eyes appeared instead of red.
I counted that as a good sign.
His lips formed into a thin angry line. A rumbling sounded in his massive chest.
Maybe not a good sign.
I stepped back. His blood had made me stronger, but I was sure he could still kill me within seconds. Maybe I made a mistake by stopping him from leaving. Perhaps, I should have given him to Adae after all.
Am I playing with fire?
Someone banged at the door and yelled through it, “Mrs. Dupree is everything okay?”
I tried to calm myself down. “Everything is fine.”
The man continued, “The guests below thought they heard lots of fighting in the room.”
“They heard wrong. My husband and I were sleeping in bed.” I gave out a nervous giggle. “However, we left the TV on in the living room. It was some old war movie. I just turned it off.”
Azar scowled at me.
“Well,” the guy continued. “If you need anything, maybe some—”
“We are fine!” Azar roared. “Now leave, human, before I feast on your soul.”
My mouth dropped open. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Um, sorry… that was the television again. This . . .remote is confusing. I switched to a different channel instead of turning it off.”
I heard nothing else, no response.
“Azar, that was unnecessary,” I whispered. “The hotel may call the police, which could alarm the U.S.C.”
“Why isn’t your husband taking care of the debt?” Azar leaned his head to the side. “Have you put him to sleep also?”
“What? No.”
“Are you sure you haven’t chained him up in a basement. Perhaps, you’ve put an ugly corduroy outfit on him?”
I frowned. “Apparently, my husband disappeared after he took the loan out with Adae.”
“Why would he need so much blood money?”
“I don’t know.”
“When did he take the loan out?”
“I don’t know that either.”
“Why don’t you know much about your husband?”
“He left me a few months after our daughter was born.”
Azar’s face softened a little. “When did Adae come to you about the debt?”
“Adae said he searched for my husband for years and decided to take my daughter and get the money from me.” I combed my fingers through my wig. “I won’t bite you. You can feed from me all you want after we get her. I just want my daughter back.”
“I don’t believe Adae didn’t find your husband. That wizard’s resources are far reaching. He always knows where I am. He just can’t catch me.”
“Adae never found him and even if he did, he has my daughter. That’s my only focus.”
“It’s a sad story, but how do I know I can trust you?” He raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms over his chest. “You’re the first woman to put me in chains.”
“Test me.” I got up on the tip of my toes and pressed my lips to his.
He snarled.
The couch and chairs rose to the ceiling.
I jumped back. “I’m not going to bite you.”
The furniture slammed down to the ground.
Silence filled the air. He scowled at me. His body was completely still.
Part of me knew I was facing defeat.
It was too late. I’d fucked our deal up.
Shaking my head, I exhaled and tried one more tactic.
Last chance, Fatou.
I grabbed the bottom of my night shirt and pulled it off. The room’s chilly temperature nipped at my exposed nipples. I balled the shirt up and threw it at him.
He didn’t move as it hit his broad shoulder and fell down to the floor. The whole time his eyes remained on mine. “You think those are the first pair of tits I’ve seen?”
“No.”
“Then, why show me?”
“Because. . .I wanted you to know that I was serious.”
His eyes traveled down to my breasts, making my nipples hard. “I’m 150 years old. I’ve licked, sucked, and fucked thousands of tits.”
“Then you can add mine to the list.”
Within seconds, he closed the distance between us, catching me by surprise. Only a few inches remained. I forced myself to breathe and to not retreat in fear as he towered over me. Rage radiated from his skin and heated mine.
You can do this.
I swallowed down my panicked thoughts, moved forward, and pressed my naked body into his.
An electric spark hit me as soon as my nipples touched his chest. “Taste me or let me taste you. I bought caps to cover my fangs.”
