“God, you’re so fucking sexy.”

“Only for you,” I whispered, eyes closed and weak as he pulled me to his lap.

I clung to him, needing a minute before I could do more.

First, we had dinner at Per Se, then we went for a horse-drawn carriage ride around Central Park. We didn’t have time for a show, but Hale promised to take me to Broadway during one of our upcoming visits when he had more time.

“I want to be there for all your firsts,” he said as we walked under the bright lights of Times Square.

While Hale had not been the guy to punch my V-card, he was the first to steal my heart. He was my first love, the first man to show me how to make love, and the first man to truly love me for the woman I was.

“I want all those firsts with you,” I confessed, lacing my fingers with his.

My love for Hale had formed a codependence I didn’t want to cure. But that’s what marriage was supposed to be, right? A partnership should be equal and reliable, shouldn’t it? Hale was my everything guy, and there was no coming back from how deeply I loved him.

As we walked, I wondered if my obsession with Hale had somehow pushed Elle away. As soon as I got home, I needed to spend some one-on-one time with her. If she could still keep secrets while looking me in the eye then there was no denying we had problems.

“I want to take a detour,” Hale said, turning left on 48th. “Are you warm enough?”

It wasn’t too cold of a night, and Hale had also bought me a long dress coat for the evening, so I was comfortable. “I’m fine.”

We had left Marty a few blocks back and I wasn’t sure how far we were from the hotel, but I was once again grateful for my flats.

Keeping his arm laced with mine, he veered me away from the bright lights. “Look.”

I smiled over the ice rink at Rockefeller Center. “This is Thirty Rock! I feel like Tina Fey might pop out at any moment.”

“I want to show you something.” He steered me toward the building.

Many flags whipped overhead as we tried to dodge the wind. Hale led me closer to the mammoth skyscraper.

When I saw the neon lights for The Tonight Show my excitement and curiosity doubled. “Holy crap, are we going to see Jimmy Fallon?”

“Better.”

The lobby doors opened, welcoming us into the warmth of a gold and ruby showcase that featured godlike sculptures and enormous works of art. Pillars climbed to the ceilings, reminding me of Olympus. I was finally starting to understand Hale’s obsession with this place as an almost tangible sense of power and possibility drifted around us.

“It feels magical, doesn’t it?”

I stared up at the breathtaking walls and cavernous ceilings. “It really does.”

“Mr. Davenport?”

Startled that someone here might recognize him, I turned. Hale shook the security guard’s hand. “Charles, thanks for meeting us. This is my fiancée, Rayne.”

The guard nodded a polite hello. “Nice to meet you. You can follow me this way.”

We trailed Charles toward an escalator and veered into a bank of elevators. “Where are we going?” I whispered.

Hale squeezed my hand. “It’s a surprise.”

We rode the elevator to the sixty-seventh floor. When we stepped out, Charles paused. “I’ll be waiting right here.”

“Thank you.” Hale released my hand to tighten the lapels of my coat, sliding the buttons through the slits. “It’s colder up here.”
