Each night, when it was late, he’d go to their room where Laura would be passed out, and he’d take the precious time to pull her into his arms. It wasn’t something he was used to, feeling this connection with a woman, but with Laura, it was different. He liked holding her and for a few moments, watching her sleep.

She always looked so peaceful.

Sipping at his whiskey, he saw her glancing around the room.

“There are no guards here if that is what you’re worried about.”

“Do you fear being attacked?”

“No. It will happen, but if it does, I will always be ready.”

“How can you ever truly be ready for something like that?”

“Practice. Age. It doesn’t take a fourteen-year-old boy long to know there are people willing to kill him, regardless of his age.”

“Even then?”

“Laura, the life of a mafia man isn’t easy. We’ve got a young shelf life, mostly.”

She stepped into the room and lowered herself down onto the sofa opposite him.

“I don’t want to be unhappy.”

He waited for her to continue.

She licked her lips and once again looked around the room, clearly trying to figure out the right words to say.

“When I married, I wanted it to be for love.”

“As do most women.”

“It’ll never happen for me. Love won’t ever come into my life. I’ve got to … just live with what I’ve got.”

“Do you have a problem with that?”

“No, I don’t know. I think so.”

“Laura, it doesn’t matter if you accept what is happening or not, you’re not going to be able to find anyone else. The moment you married me, you became mine.”

“And if something happens to you?” she asked.

“Planning on killing me?”

“No, of course not. Why would you think that?”

“You and I, we’ve not got anything in common, and we’ve never gotten along.”

“You’ve bullied me my whole life, but I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.”

Now this did surprise him. “Do you have a little crush on me?”

“No!” She glared at him. “I don’t have a crush on you.”

“But you’re attracted to me. You can’t deny what your pussy wants.”

“I’m trying to be nice here, and you’re making it impossible for me to do so.” She didn’t stand up though.

“I like the fire is back. It wasn’t right you being so quiet.” He leaned back in his chair. His dick was already hardening as he wondered if she wore a pair of her childish pajamas or one of the sheer negligees he’d picked out.

Her curvy body was not designed to be swamped in sweats and pajamas too many sizes too big for her.

“I don’t want to be unhappy. I’d like to make this work.”

“You and me?”

“Yes. This is our marriage, and we can’t get out of it. I doubt you want to be married to a bitch, do you?”

“You’ve got that right. No bitch is required for me, thank you.” He sipped at his whiskey. “Would you like some?”

“No. I want a clear head.”

“Suit yourself.”

“I don’t want to get pregnant,” she said.

“You don’t have a choice there.”

“Why?”

“None of your business.”

“This is my body.”

“I’ve got orders.”

“And getting me pregnant is one of them?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have any attraction to me at all?”

“Where is this conversation going?” he asked. He couldn’t tell her what was at stake or that her mother had been denied the right to have more children because of her grandparents’ will.

The Davis fortune would belong to them once again. It was a legit business, but they could use the resources to help channel their other endeavors.

Whatever The Boss’s reasoning for getting it back, it was now his, or would be in the event of Laura’s pregnancy.

“I … I don’t know anything. I don’t understand what is going on. I’m confused, scared, and I don’t like feeling this way.” She stood up and began to pace. He stared at her legs, which were exposed beneath the robe.

“Take the robe off,” he said.

“Marcus?”

“Take the robe off.” Another sip of his whiskey and he waited. He wouldn’t ask her again, and if she only came to him to talk, he was going to take a very cold shower.

She removed the robe, placing it on the back of the sofa.

His wife had decided to wear one of the negligees he’d gotten for her. He doubted she even knew he’d been the one to pick out her clothes for her.

“There, happy?”

“You want to know if my attraction to you is real.” He stood up and moved the coffee table out of the way.

Taking hold of her arm, he pulled her close, and she stumbled a little but righted herself when she was in front of him.

“If you’re being ordered around to have sex with me, to get me pregnant, if we don’t even have an attraction, what can we do to make this a happy marriage?”

“I’m supposed to believe overnight you’ve changed your mind and want our marriage to be a real one?” he asked.
