“Good. I’ll handle the gym. Just keep me updated as you find something out please.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I ended the call and shoved my phone into my pocket before striding out of the house. After finding Lennox’s spare key under a rotted potted plant on her porch, I locked her door and slid her key onto my key ring.

My phone pinged with a text.

Adler: Got the attorney on the way. Get to the clubhouse.

I sent back a thumbs up before straddling my bike.

Just hang in there, doll, I silently thought, wishing she could hear me. I’m going to get you out of this.

Three

Lennox

The wall behind me was hard, and the bench beneath my ass was uncomfortable. I’d stuffed myself into the corner of the holding cell, trying to just remain out of the way. I didn’t know what Harlan was getting done for me. He’d said he’d get me out of this, but what could he really do? And why did he want to help me? We barely knew each other—had only been around each other a handful of times and had hardly exchanged more than a few words before last night.

The door was suddenly unlocked, and an officer peered in at me. “McNair, your attorney is here.”

I hadn’t called an attorney. In fact, I hadn’t made a single phone call. I didn’t have family here to help me. I probably should’ve called Mikayla, but hell, I didn’t know what to say. What if she decided having me attached to the gym would be bad for business and she fired me? I wasn’t ready to face that music yet if that was what awaited me.

I got off the bench and allowed the female officer to cuff my hands in front of me. She led me down a couple of hallways until we reached an interview room. A woman with dark hair pulled back into a sleek bun stood from her chair and smiled warmly at me. She was wearing a pair of slacks with a creme-colored blouse, and her face was done with very minimal makeup. Very professional-looking.

“Lennox?” she asked. I nodded. She gestured to the seat across from her, so I sat. I mean, what the fuck else was I going to do? Deny access to an attorney? I might be hot-headed, but I wasn’t stupid. “I’m Genesis Lovell. Adler called me and asked me to take on your case.”

I forced a smile onto my lips. I was appreciative, but it was really hard to show that right then. I felt trapped. Fucking hated it. “I appreciate him doing so, but ma’am, I don’t have the funds to pay you,” I told her honestly.

She waved me off. “It’s already being covered. Harlan is paying me.”

I choked for a moment before roughly clearing my throat. Now that I hadn’t been expecting, and damn if my heart didn’t clench in my chest and my belly didn’t erupt in butterflies. Warmth spread through my veins.

Harlan barely even knew me. He knew more about my body than he did me as a person, and yet he’d come through for me, just as he promised he would. He’d stopped me from doing anything stupider last night, and even now, he was doing what he could to help me, to keep me out of too much trouble.

Fuck, I had no idea how I was going to repay him. Because for me, this went deeper than just repaying money. He was giving me something I’d never had.

Someone who had my back.

“I won’t hold you long,” she told me. “I had to squeeze you into my schedule.” I nodded in understanding. “I’m going to do what I can to get your charges brought down. I’ll arrange a meeting to see you again before your hearing, but the easiest thing for you to do is to plead guilty. I’ll work with the judge to see if I can get you just probation, a fine, and some community service.”

“That’s doable,” I told her. Fuck, anything was better than jail time. Harlan had been right last night; I wasn’t ready to face the consequences.

She nodded once. “Good. Harlan is working on getting bail posted for you. Just sit tight. Shouldn’t be much longer, okay?”

There went my damn heart again.

“Thank you,” I told her. “And please tell Harlan I said thank you as well if you speak to him.”

She stood from her chair, smiling at me. “You can tell him yourself in a little bit. As for me, no problem, hun.” She winked at me. “Sometimes cheating exes need to be taught a lesson.”

I snorted and raised my cuffed hands to wave at her before she left the room.

The glass door shut quietly behind me as I stepped out onto the sidewalk of the sheriff’s station. I’d only been in that holding cell for a few hours, but fuck, it felt like an eternity. Being locked away was not for me. I wasn’t built for that shit.
