Just when she starts to fall asleep, the president of the college calls Ree’s name, and she steps onto the stage. Looking as beautiful as the day I met her, she walks up to the podium. The moment her voice comes through the speakers around the room, Rin sits up.
“She’s right there.” I point to where Ree is on the stage, and Rin’s face lights up.
“Mama.” Even from a distance, Ree hears Rin’s voice and looks our way, smiling. But she doesn’t falter in her valedictorian speech. I’m not surprised. My wife never falters. She also doesn’t do anything half-assed. From being the best wife to the biggest cheerleader for me while I was still playing hockey and coming to every game she could—even when she claimed to hate sports. To being the most amazing mom to our daughter, all the while completing school. And not just completing it but crushing it and coming out at the top of her class. And even while doing all that, she still somehow found the time to make me fall a little more in love with her every single day.
And I know that will never change.
