Well, that wasn’t exactly true. I didn’t want to keep her a secret, per se.

But I wanted to keep her safe, and I knew that Nico Ulrich’s parents were batshit insane. Keeping Ada safe meant keeping her out of their weird Russian clutches. I didn’t care if they gave me all the money in the world in exchange for Ada – I wouldn’t give up my daughter for anything.

Now, thinking about the night before, I began to wonder if I wasn’t acting purely out of selfish motives. Nico was arrogant and masculine, but that didn’t mean that he wouldn’t be a good father. When I tried to picture him and Ada together, though, it just didn’t feel right. It had taken long enough for me to trust leaving her with the Dawning City staff, and they were professionals! What would happen if I left Ada with Nico for the afternoon while I went out shopping? Would he get bored, crack a beer, put on ESPN and leave her in her toddler bed?

Or worse, would he get bored with me? My stomach churned and I swallowed hard as I thought about it. I’d be the boring mama, the one who had to stay home and put our daughter to bed while Nico went out and partied with athletes and models.

I didn’t want to think about him that way. I thought that I’d begun to see a new side of Nico, a side that I’d never even remotely considered existed.

Maybe I had been wrong. Maybe all this time, I’d only been seeing what I had wanted to see.

And now, with the raunchy text message lighting up my phone, a confusing blend of feelings ran through my body. As much as I wanted to keep my distance from Nico and stay at arm’s length, I was beginning to realize that it simply wasn’t possible. I was too attracted to him – whenever we were in the same room, I felt like our bodies were powerful magnets.

If it wasn’t for Ada, I was sure that I would caved a long time ago.

A smile spread across my face and I tiptoed into my bedroom and lay down on the bed. Here Nico was, in his late thirties, and sexting me like a frat boy. The thought of him pacing his luxurious condo and staring down at his phone made me giggle and filled me with a strange knowledge: here he was, giving me power over him.

Well, whatever happened between us, I was going to make him work for it.

“The blood of my enemies,” I texted back after impatiently waiting for ten minutes to pass. “You?”

I giggled again and blushed bright red – I’d thought of Nico acting like a college kid but here I was, toying and playing with him.

Seconds later, my phone buzzed in my hands and I looked down to see a picture of Nico mugging at the camera. He was wearing a black t-shirt that clung to his muscular torso and those obscene track pants that he’d worn into HAUTESCENE. I swallowed hard as my heart began to beat faster.

Damnit, he knew just how to play with me!

I shifted in my bed and my sleep-shorts rode up, tugging at my crotch. The silky material of my panties slid over my pussy and I could feel myself getting wetter with each passing second. Still blushing, I ran an experimental hand over my body.

Were we really doing this?

Were we really about to start sexting like teenagers?

“Like it?” Nico texted, about a minute after sending me the picture.

I nodded enthusiastically as if he was in the room with me.

“maybe,” I texted back. Biting my lower lip, I giggled as I watched the dots move across the bottom of the screen that indicated he was typing. When they stopped and disappeared, I groaned softly.

He may have known just how to play with me – but I knew exactly how to let him, and the knowledge was near-infuriating.

“i’m serious,” Nico texted. “like what you see, huh?”

I grinned. Goddamnit, he was so arrogant! He knew how hot he was, how much desire he could inspire in me. Even though our apartments were in completely different boroughs of the city, I felt like he was in the room with me, watching me as my cheeks reddened and my heart pounded faster and faster. Inside of my pajama shirt, my nipples stiffened against the cotton material. I stretched and moaned softly under my breath, pretending that Nico was right here.

“I’m being serious,” Nico texted when I didn’t reply right away. “I’m hot and horny and so mf pissed off that you aren’t here.”

I blinked, my giggles fading into the darkness. Was he, really?

Didn’t he know that he could go out and get anyone he wanted?

My heart slowed at the thought that maybe he couldn’t – maybe he only wanted me.
