Liam thrusts into her from behind and the girl moans, whipping her head of blonde hair around, and that’s when we lock eyes. That snaps me out of my trance. My heart starts pounding as my frozen shock melts and gives way to anger. The girl squeals, pulling away from Liam, and brings her knees up in front of her chest in a half-assed attempt at modesty.
“A little privacy?!” she shrieks as if she’s the one being wronged—as if I’m the one intruding on a private moment between lovers—and well, apparently, I am.
Liam turns around, his smirk slipping when he realizes it’s me standing here. His eyes widen with pure panic as he scrambles off the bed, cupping his dick with both hands. The look on his face would be comical if the circumstances were different.
“Surprise.” My voice is cold and hard, concealing the sting of betrayal I feel. I spin around before I’m hit with the onslaught of excuses that’s sure to come.
“Valen, wait—”
“No, by all means, carry on.” I slam the door shut and force my steps to keep a respectable pace as I head for the exit. I’m not going to make a scene, and I’m certainly not going to cry.
I knew something was up. Walking in on him in the act was a shock, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see this thing coming to an end. I told myself I’d use this weekend to decide if I even wanted this anymore. Turns out, he’s already moved on. He just didn’t have the decency to tell me.
I push my way through the clusters of people gathered in the small living room, my eyes laser-focused on the front door. I just need to make it outside, and then I can lose my shit. I’m halfway there when I hear Liam call my name loud enough for everyone in Sawyer Point to hear, but I don’t stop. I don’t even pause.
“Valen, come on. We need to talk about this.”
That has me pausing. I stop short and turn around, shaking my head, incredulous. Talk? His dick is still wet from another girl and he wants to talk? I want to scream at him, but I’m very aware of the fact that we’ve gained a rapt audience.
“I promise you, Liam, we have nothing to talk about.”
He’s wearing nothing but a pair of boxers as he scratches the back of his neck. He seems to consider his next move, beads of sweat rolling down his temples. As if this scene wasn’t embarrassing enough, the music cuts out, allowing everyone the opportunity to hear us loud and clear. “Let’s not be immature about this.” He sounds exasperated, as if my being upset is inconveniencing him.
“That’s what you get for dating high school girls,” a bitter voice chimes in as the girl from his room appears behind him.
“Shut the fuck up, Tara.”
Tara. So that’s her name.
For once, I have no witty comeback or venomous retort on the tip of my tongue. I just…freeze. Humiliated. Stunned silent. And now every single person here is aware of exactly what just happened. I can feel their curious stares searing my skin. My ears get hot, either from anger or embarrassment or both, when suddenly, a warm, large hand captures mine, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
I frown, looking down at the hand that encases mine, then follow it up to the boy it belongs to.
“Well, this is awkward. You ready to get out of here, V?” Holden watches me expectantly, waiting for my response, casual as can be. It’s the complete opposite of what I’m feeling. He’s the last person I want to see right now.
“V?” Liam scoffs at the nickname that Holden has never once used for me—the nickname he just came up with on the spot for Liam’s benefit—dragging my attention away from Holden. Liam’s laser beam gaze is burning a hole through our locked hands as if he has any right to be upset. I snatch my hand out of Holden’s, and Liam looks up to find me glaring at him before shifting his focus back to Holden.
“You been keeping my girl company while I’ve been gone?”
“Which one?” Holden quips with a pointed glance in his current companion’s direction.
Outside. Fresh air. Only two feet away. Cut it off.
I turn for the door once more, and this time I don’t look back. Once I’m outside, I hear the door to the apartment open again right behind me and I roll my eyes, hurrying my steps.
“I don’t want to talk to you!” I yell over my shoulder without looking as I unzip my wristlet to find my keys.
“I don’t want to talk to you either,” comes a voice that doesn’t belong to Liam. I stop short, turning around as Holden approaches.
“Sorry,” I mutter, not sounding sorry at all.
