“Do we have to go home?” Emma asked with a sweet pout.
I grinned and kissed the tip of her nose before helping her down the ladder onto the dock. “I wish we didn’t have to, sweetheart,” I told her honestly. “However, I can’t continue to ignore my clients, and it will be nice to get settled into our new life.”
It had taken us a week to travel to the Caribbean. Then we’d spent the last week exploring the islands and getting to know each other. Though I think we spent the most time acquainting ourselves with the other’s body, we also did a lot of talking. We had a lot in common as far as our personalities, but again, it didn’t escape my notice that she avoided discussing her home and family other than in generalities.
I knew it made me a hypocrite to be frustrated by that when I was hiding such huge parts of my past. But, nonetheless, it bothered me and I was determined to get her to open up. If I was going to get her to fall in love with me, she would have to give me all of her.
Hopefully, our honeymoon had already accomplished my other goal. I’d certainly filled her with enough of my seed to make it a real possibility. But that didn’t mean I had any intention of putting less effort into the baby-making process once we got home.
No matter what, I was going to prove to Emma that we belonged together, and leaving our honeymoon bubble to step back into the real world was the next step.
Chapter Six
EMMA
“I definitely can’t complain about not having anything to wear,” I laughed to myself, flipping through the section of my closet where the designer evening gowns were hung. Swiveling my head, I took in the other racks of clothes, ranging from cocktail dresses to jeans and casual tops. And the shelves of shoes. So many pretty shoes. “Like ever again.”
I’d thought Miles had gone a bit overboard with the stuff he’d bought me for the honeymoon, especially since he’d made it obvious that he’d be okay if I’d only worn teeny tiny bikinis and sexy lingerie the whole time we were gone. I hadn’t realized that was barely the tip of the iceberg of what he’d purchased for me. Not until we got home yesterday and he’d told me that all my stuff from my apartment was already unpacked in my closet. When I’d gone looking for a pair of comfy pajamas—an exercise in futility, since Miles insisted on me sleeping nude, apparently even when I was tired from traveling—I’d discovered the rest of the clothing and accessories he’d bought.
It’d been a shock, but not in a bad way. And it was a well-timed one that helped lift my spirits. I’d been disappointed at how quickly our alone time during our honeymoon had passed. When we were on the yacht, it had felt like we were in our own bubble with the real world far removed from us. With so much together time, the connection between us had grown incredibly quickly…and all the hot sex sure hadn’t hurt, either.
But now we were back in the real world, and I found myself floundering a little bit even though it’d only been a day. I wanted to believe it was just because of the big charity event Miles told me we were attending tonight, but if I was being honest with myself, I’d admit it was more because we needed to find our footing as a couple away from the tropics and in the reality of life in New York City society. Something I wasn’t the least bit familiar with, let alone as the wife of a wealthy man.
“Have you picked out what you’d like to wear tonight?” Miles asked as he walked into my closet. I let out a little yelp of surprise as I twirled around and pressed one hand against my breasts and the other over the juncture of my legs. I was virtually naked in a barely-there, lacy black bra with matching panties, garter belt, silk stockings, and sling-back heels. Miles was dangerously hot in a black tuxedo with matching vest, crisp white shirt, and perfectly done black bow tie. His blue eyes darkened as his gaze swept down my body and back up again. “No need to cover up for my benefit. Not when I like the sight of you in that lingerie even more than you naked…maybe.”
He prowled towards me, and I backed up against the clothes behind me. “Miles, if you don’t stop, we’re going to be late,” I warned, lifting my hand from my breasts to press it against his chest when he got close.
“C’mon, sweetheart. I just want to get a better look so I can properly judge which way I like you best.” He slid a finger under a bra strap, but I slapped it away. I pressed my lips firmly together to keep any sounds of desire from escaping. Just a little touch, and he had my heart racing and my skin buzzing with electricity.
