With that I turned and left.

“SAM!” Leah yelled to my back, but I didn’t turn back. I looked into Cheyenne’s eyes and felt no guilt for the decision I had made. That horrible bumpy road that was my life has led me straight to Cheyenne, and I couldn’t be any happier.

CHEYENNE

My heart hurt for Leah, but there wasn’t anything I could do for her. She was in a tough situation, and it didn’t look like it was going to get any better any time soon. I was lying next to Sam, curled into his body. My head was lying on his chest, nose being slightly tickled by his chest hair, and my hand was absently stroking up and down his happy trail. My right leg was tangled up in both of his. Sam’s hand was sifting through my hair, every once in a while getting stuck on a tangle which he worked out with a flick of his fingers.

“You’re good at that. My hair is getting so long that I don’t even bother to brush out the tangles anymore.” I said to him.

“Mmmm.” He mumbled.

“How did you get that scar under your eye?” I asked him suddenly. I had been wondering for a while, and I figured it happened when he was younger because it looked like a really old scar.

The only outward sign that he was uncomfortable with this topic was the slight tension of his abdominals, which I wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t been so close to him.

“One of the times dad found us. Dad’s second in command tried to put my mom on his bike, and I tried to keep her off his bike. I was twelve. There was a struggle, and he kicked me in the stomach. I fell and hit my face on the wheel of his bike’s tire. There were these details to the wheel that were shaped like curved blades and sliced right through the skin under my eye. It was a mess. Blood was everywhere. Mom was screaming. Had to go to the hospital and get stitches. Couldn’t see out of the eye for weeks. Only good thing that came out of it was dad nearly killed him for hurting me. Apparently he had given the order never to hurt me, but mom was expendable.” He said blandly.

“Holy crap. You could have lost your eye!” I said horrified.

“Yep.” He said matter of factly. “Time for bed. I have to ride out early tomorrow to go get some parts in Dallas. And you have to work at eight. So we both need to get some sleep.” He kissed my head, and then reached over to turn off the lamp, plunging the room into darkness.

I laid there for quite a while trying to figure out his mood. Normally we made love before we went to bed, and tonight I didn’t even get an inappropriate grope. Was he thinking about Leah? Was he having second thoughts? Something was wrong, and I didn’t like the feeling it was giving me.

I let my hand trail down his happy trail until my fingers teased just above his boxer-briefs, and then traced the line back up again, back and forth. I stopped at the elastic of his underwear again, letting my fingers trail over the ridges of his abs and the bumps of the veins that ran down to his lower half. I let my fingers start to slip under the band when he caught my hand and brought it up to his chest where he captured it and held it there.

Something was wrong, and I didn’t know what. Tears slowly started to slip out of my eyes which I quickly tried to quench before he could tell. I rolled over to my back and grabbed my bear which was never far away and curled it into my chest, bending my head down and burying my face into its matted fur that had aged with use and time.

Sam tensed behind me when he felt the bear. Although the bear never left the bed, I hadn’t slept with it lately since I always seemed to be up snug against Sam. Tonight I needed it though, because I had a feeling that he was thinking about Leah while being in bed with me. I ignored Sam at my back and tried to stem the flow of my tears. I almost had them stopped when I felt his fingers reach to drag my hair behind my ears, and brush against my wet cheeks.

Freezing when he felt the wetness on my cheeks he asked, “What’s wrong, baby?”

“Nothing.” I whispered.

Of course, when a man hears nothing, he should always assume it is something, and that something is big. He had obviously been with enough women to know that was the case.

“Tell me what’s wrong.” He demanded.

“You aren’t acting right.” I finally said.

“How do you figure?” he asked gruffly.

“You were rather abrupt when we went to bed, and then wouldn’t let me touch you.” I said back to him, and then blurted, “Are you thinking about Leah?”

“I wanted to make sure you started getting more sleep. You seem so tired lately, and I just assumed it was from me keeping you up late, and then waking you up early when I leave in the morning. I thought I would give you a break tonight.” He answered. “It had absolutely nothing to do with Leah. She was out of my mind when I turned my back on her in the bar.”

“I don’t think its staying up late and waking up early in the morning. I think it’s more the James being hurt, Kayla situation more than anything. I don’t sleep well because I just worry. I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t shut my brain down. I’m sorry. You just shut me down, and I started to worry. You never say no, and I just started thinking bad thoughts.”

He didn’t answer me, but his hand did start roaming. His front was plastered to my back spooning me. His right arm was pillowed under my head and running along the top of the bed, while his other arm slid up under his t-shirt and cupped my breast with his big rough hands. His thumb rasped over my nipple slowly, back and forth. I wiggled my butt and rubbed it against his erection. This was more like it.
