The main characters were best friends, and the heroine was crazy about him— only neither of them knew it. She had to meet someone else and almost marry him before either of them came to their senses. Thankfully, it just took a silly date with Ben to draw Wyatt’s attention, and since then, things couldn’t have been better.

He was loving and attentive, and over the past few days, our friendship had only grown stronger. It was a thought that had me wishing he was there watching the movie with me. Curious to see if things had died down, I got up, and when I peeked out in the hall, I was pleased to see that things were finally settling down. I was just about to close the door when I heard Wyatt say, “Hey.”

“Hey.” I opened the door wider and watched as he stepped inside my room. Just looking at him made it hard to breathe, hard to think, and I could tell by the look in his eyes that he felt the same when he looked at me. “I wasn’t expecting to see you. I figured you’d be busy with the brothers.”

“I can’t stay. I just wanted to come and make sure you made it back.”

“Yeah, Torch and Wrath came and kept an eye on things while I was in class.”

“Good.” He stepped closer. “I would’ve come myself, but I was working on something. I still am. That’s why I have to get back.”

“That’s okay. I understand.”

He stood there just staring at me; the onslaught of emotions raging in his eyes stole my breath. My heart skipped a beat when he brought his hand up to my throat and gently wrapped his fingers around my neck. He guided me forward as he leaned over and pressed his mouth to mine, kissing me tenderly, possessively.

In that moment, it was just him and me, and it was the most incredible feeling I’d ever experienced. His hands dropped to my waist, and a small, needful moan vibrated through my chest as he pulled me closer. The caress of his lips was magic, making me feel like I was floating on air.

He deepened the kiss, but only for a moment. Time wasn’t on our side, so I wasn’t surprised when he took a step back, breaking free from our embrace. We both stood there gazing at one another. Neither of us said a word. We knew exactly what that kiss meant.

The feelings we’d been experiencing were mutual, and as much as we wanted to act on them, they would have to wait—at least for now. Wyatt rested his forehead on mine as he whispered, “I have to go.”

“I know.”

“I’ll be back when I can.”

“I hope that’s sooner than later.”

“You and me both.”

He gave me one last kiss, then turned and left the room, leaving me alone once again. Still feeling the sensation of having his mouth on mine, I brought my hand up to my face and ran my fingers across my lips. I missed it. I missed him and wondered when I might actually get to see him again.

I couldn’t be sure, but I had a nagging feeling that it was going to be longer than any of us cared to imagine.

CHAPTER 12

Bones

Patience had never been one of my strong suits, especially when my brothers’ lives were at stake. I’d tried to hold out and wait for Big to come to me, but time was of the essence. I had to tell him what I’d found, so I left the office and went to track them down. When Rooster told me he was in Cotton’s office with Stitch, I headed straight there. I knocked on the door, and without giving anyone a chance to answer, I charged inside. Big, Stitch, and Cotton all turned and looked at me like I’d lost my mind, so I wasted no time saying, “I found a lead on who’s been fucking with the club.”

“What?” Cotton’s back stiffened. “How’d you manage that?”

“I’ve been looking into the camera thing,” I answered. “I picked up where Big and I left off, and I...”

Before I could finish my thought, Stitch turned to Big and said, “You said the camera thing was a dead end.”

“I did, but maybe I was wrong.”

“David Bruton.”

“Yeah?” Cotton sounded intrigued. “What about him?”

“He’s our guy.”

“You talking about the history teacher?”

“Yeah, that’s him, but he’s not who you think he is.”

I told them about the movie Elsie and I had watched and how it had gotten me to think that the men we were after might be right here under our noses. I told them how I’d started going through each of the names on Big’s list and how the first few background checks came up clear. None of them said a word as I told them about Bruton’s work history and how it ended in ’98. “The trail ran dry, so I used our facial recognition software. That’s when I found that his name is actually Carl Davenport, and he used to work for Interpol.”
