“That’s right.” Helping him to get the binkie in his mouth, I looked him over. “You are a very adorable little and are going to be very well-behaved, right?”
He made an exaggerated thinking face before nodding and pointing at me.
Hmm.
“You’re going to be a good boy because I’m here?” Luckily, I guessed right and he nodded. “Thank you. We need to make a good impression so Austin will stop worrying.”
Giggling around his binkie, Dessie nodded.
“Silly monkey.” Slinging his bag over my shoulder, I held out my arms. “Up?”
That was an enthusiastic yes because he leapt at me and made a happy monkey sound. Laughing as I caught him, I wrapped my arms around him and made sure we were all set. “There we go. Now we’re going to show Austin that he doesn’t need to babysit us.”
Dessie shook with laughter as he pressed his face against my neck. I was hilarious and he was happy, so it was all good.
Until I was met with a frowning Austin who greeted us at the door.
What the fuck had crawled up his ass and died while I’d been getting Dessie ready?
Nope.
“We’re ready.” Something about his expression said the tour would be a bad idea, so I looked around. “How about we go directly and play and you give us a tour another time?”
Austin’s expression lightened, so I focused my rambling in that direction. “Dessie is feeling cheeky and who knows what he’ll get up to otherwise.”
Giving his padded bottom a smack as he giggled, I sighed. “Don’t forget my reward later.”
Austin raised one eyebrow as more happy sounds escaped Dessie. “That’s not how this is supposed to work. He gets the rewards.”
I scoffed, which set Dessie off again. “I’m a new Daddy, so I get to make my own rules. I was good, so I get the reward.”
The drama queen’s face scrunched up. “I’m not going to agree with that.”
Rolling my eyes as Dessie tried to silence his giggles, I huffed. “Then it’s a good thing I’m not your Daddy.”
Dessie would’ve been rolling on the floor if he’d been standing.
“No.” Shaking his head, Austin whirled around on the heels he was now wearing and marched toward a large staircase. “Just no.”
Whispering softly as I followed the crazy man, I teased Dessie. “Daddy’s always right.”
And that set him off again.
Chapter 24
Dessie
Up.
Up.
Up the stairs.
Oh, friends.
Giggles and laughing and cookies.
“Daddy, cookies.” Pat pat pat. Oops. Catch the binkie. “Cookies, Daddy. Hurry. Hurry.”
Daddy groaned. Slowy. Slowy. “You can not be hungry.”
“Yes.” Wiggle wiggle. Kiss cheek. Smile. “Cookie tummy hungry.”
Daddy frowny face.
Austin big helper. “Everyone knows snack tummies and dinner tummies are two different things.”
Oh yes.
Austin smart.
Daddy got big frowny. “Why wasn’t I told that? You keep handing out information piecemeal and that’s something that needs to be written down.”
Oh, Daddy made Austin thinky.
Daddy was sneaky.
No giggles.
No giggles.
Binkie time.
“Hmm.” Austin frowny and thinky. “You’re right. That’s not something that you should be expected to know.”
Smart Daddy.
“You need to start writing these things down when you think of them.” Serious face Daddy. “Don’t you have a document where you’re taking notes?”
Hmm.
Daddy knew a secret.
“A notebook at the very least?” Smart Daddy sighed. “You need to make sure the next new Daddy understands things like this or he won’t know real manipulation from the cute kind.”
Two kinds?
Hmm.
“Fine.” Drama Austin. Hands up. Whirl around and around. “I have to go make notes. You’ll be fine. Jarrett is a wonderful teacher.”
Daddy won.
Austin stompy.
No giggles.
No giggles.
Daddy whispers. “Don’t give it away. Shh.”
Smart Daddy.
Nodding. Nodding. “Shhh.”
Daddy smiley. “You’re going to make me laugh. Don’t look so cute.”
Oops.
Daddy frowny. “Um, Austin pointed us in this direction. I’m certain you know Dessie.”
Oh.
“Hi…” Oops. “Good boy, Daddy.”
Fast. Fast. Binkie. Yay.
Cuddles.
“If you try to jump out of my arms and end up landing on your head, you’re going to lose your good boy status.” Daddy growly.
“He’s little.” Uncle Jarrett smart too.
“He’s usually this little.” Daddy had frowny face.
“Not here.” Uncle Jarrett thinky.
Peeking.
Waving.
Gideon peeking.
Charlie giggle. Charlie wave. “Hi….”
Uncle Jarrett frowny. “Well, he seems unlikely to throw the crayons anymore.”
Hmm.
Yes.
“Cookies, Daddy.” Pat. Pat. Pat. “Cookies. Share.”
Daddy huffed.
Daddy puffed.
“Fine.” Daddy say yes. Yay. “But I know that snack tummy thing is nonsense.”
No giggles.
No giggles.
Uncle Jarrett coughed. “Um, yes, that is nonsense no matter what Austin says. Come on in and I’ll make sure he gets a cookie.”
“Thank you.” Daddy snuggly hug his best boy. “I have snacks in his bag but not cookies.”
Daddy got his silly growly voice. “Because someone said they weren’t hungry and didn’t need a treat.”
“Nooo, Daddy.” Kiss. Kiss. “Oops.”
Daddy huffed. “I’m not asking you what you want to bring to the club any longer. That was a fruitless discussion.”
Fruit.
Ha.
More Daddy kisses.
Playtime.
Snack time.
Oh, shows.
Wiggle. Wiggle. Kisses. Down. Binkie. Yay.
Chapter 25
Tyson
Dessie’s only focus was cookies and the cartoon movie on the television, but I was taking in a lot more all at once. The changing table in the corner, the toys, the stuffed animals…and how the Daddy in charge of the playroom was staring at me.
