“Okay, well, that makes me feel slightly less like a freak,” I said, moaning when his other hand cupped my breast. I turned in his arms as his mouth trailed down my neck and he picked me up, carrying me back to bed.

Much later we went downstairs to eat. Carra was pottering about the house while Sven followed her around, trying to convince her to take a break and come explore the forest with him. I went outside with my cup of coffee, sitting down on the step before Vas came to join me. We stayed like that for a while, just enjoying the quiet and taking in our surroundings.

Yesterday we’d had sex without protection. I’d given myself over to the moment. Normally I would’ve used a condom but with Vas I didn’t want any barriers. We’d spent a year waiting for each other and the desire had taken over. I made a mental note to pay my mother a visit and get her to make me a little magical contraceptive. We dhampirs weren’t known for our fertility. In fact we were a rare species because becoming pregnant was difficult for us, but it was still a good idea to be cautious.

A snippet played in my mind, of the future where our son ran into my arms. I wasn’t ready for a child but one day I would be and I looked forward to becoming a mother.

Just not today.

A squawk sounded in the distance and I spotted Reeoyna flying towards us. Vas lifted his chin and watched her descent. She landed smoothly and gave a little shimmy of delight at seeing Vas. He put down his coffee and went to press his hand to her flank in greeting. He brought his forehead to hers and they shared a moment of communication.

Sometimes she spoke to me, too, but only rarely. She didn’t have a voice, but she could spell things out in my mind and show me pictures. I went to join them, shooting Vas a little smile.

“Want to go check out the rest of Yellowbranch? I didn’t have time to give you a proper tour yesterday.”

“Sure,” he said and then I motioned for him to climb onto Reeoyna’s back. She dipped her head, signalling she was more than happy to take us for a ride. I’d been flying around on her regularly. I was apprehensive when she’d first offered but it soon became a way for us to bond. It was also an exhilarating experience to fly above the trees and houses.

Vas climbed astride her and I slid on behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist. A second later she took flight. The wind rushed through my hair as we rose high above the trees. Reeoyna elegantly flew us around the village where people were busy going about their day. All seven of the demon gargoyles were a regular sighting around the area and no one gasped anymore when they spotted them. They’d become a part of the scenery.

My heart filled to take in all that we’d managed to build over the past year.

Vas took my hand in his, interlacing our fingers as he gazed down and I felt his pride even though he didn’t say a word. I snuggled closer, closing my eyes as I rested my head against his shoulders and let the world slip away for a little while. I loved him with all my heart. I had everything I needed right here and it was the best feeling in this world and all the countless others.

END.
