Kane put his hand up to stop me and shakes his head.
“I didn’t exactly do anything to prevent this from happening,” he smiles slyly. “I never said kids weren’t in my plan. I just never had anyone I wanted to have them with before.”
He puts his hand on my thigh and looks at me with tears in his eyes.
“Having a baby with you will be a dream come true. I know you’ll make a wonderful mother, Rey.”
I’m overwhelmed by Kane’s words as I put my hand on top of his and squeeze it in response.
“I love you, baby. So much.”
Letting out the breath it seems I’ve been holding in, I wrap my arms around him.
“I love you, Kane.”
He squeezes me against his strong body.
“We’re in this together,” he assures me just before we kiss passionately.
I press my forehead to his and look into his eyes lovingly.
“I can’t believe you’re saying all of this. I was so worried you wouldn’t want us,” I say, nodding down to my belly.
“Oh, Rey. There’s nobody I’ve wanted more. You’re giving me a family… That makes me ecstatic,” he grins before it fades into concern. “But I’m worried about you. What about school?”
I laugh and give him a sideways look.
“You know I don’t give a damn about school. I was just going to make Dad happy.”
Kane lets out a sigh. “I don’t want to crush all of his dreams for you in one swoop.”
I pout and look back into Kane’s eyes.
“I’ll think about it,” I say, snuggling into him. “Do you think Dad will ever forgive us?”
“You, yes,” Kane says confidently. “Me, I don’t think so, Rey.”
I look up at Kane’s face. When he sees me looking, he puts on a fake smile. Sitting up, I kiss him softly.
“I never wanted to come between you two.”
“Don’t blame yourself, okay? Sometimes, things are out of our control.”
“And you think this was one of those things?” I laugh at him.
“You can’t control who you fall in love with, right?” Kane winks.
I jump on him and kiss him, wanting to pick up where we left off before Daddy walked in on us.

Kane
A month has passed since I found out I was going to be a father. My entire life changed that day. I no longer work for my own personal success. Instead, I work harder and faster because when my baby comes, I want to be there for him or her, and I want to be there for Renee.
She’s been nesting over the past couple of weeks, and I love seeing her motherly side come out. Every day when I come home, she’s done research on the best car seats or on breastfeeding techniques. The girl who hates to study has been working hard to prepare for the arrival of our child.
The best part of it all is that Renee and I no longer have to hide our relationship. We go out to romantic dinners and kiss in public. Sure, sometimes people stare or occasionally think I’m her father, but we just laugh it off.
I couldn’t be happier… well, one thing would make it better— Colt’s forgiveness. But I’m not holding my breath on that one.
After work, I head home. To my surprise, in the driveway is Renee’s Nissan that Colt and I got her for graduation. I walk through the door and call out to Renee.
“Baby, how’d your car get here?” I call out as I walk into the living room to see Chastity sitting down with Renee.
A few suitcases are lying in the middle of the floor. A sudden panic washes over me. Is Renee leaving?
“What’s going on? Hey, Chastity,” I wave to her.
“Hi, Kane,” she waves back.
“Chastity brought my car and a bunch of my stuff over,” Renee explains. “Dad asked her to.”
I raise an eyebrow. “Seriously?”
Chastity smiles. “He asked me how Renee is doing, and I told him that I have never seen her happier. He actually smiled about that. He told me he wants her to have her car because she can’t drive the baby around in Kane’s pick-up or Mustang.”
Renee laughs, and I catch her wiping tears from her eyes. I know how much this one small gesture means to her. It means the world to me as well.
“That’s really good of him, but then again, I’m not surprised. Colt has always been the level-headed one of us two,” I sigh.
“He’ll come around,” Chastity says, rubbing Renee’s shoulder. “I check on him whenever I can. I know he misses you both.”
“You want to stay for dinner?” I ask.
“Thanks, but I have plans,” Chastity stands up, and Renee follows suit.
“Good seeing you,” I say, hugging Chastity. “You’re a great friend.”
Renee walks Chastity out before she rushes into my arms.
“There’s hope,” I say into her ear.
“I miss him,” Renee cries.
“I do too.” I rub her back, wishing I could take all of her pain away. “How about I order the baby’s favorite for dinner?”
