I’d always been aware of the tension in the room whenever his name came up. But it wasn’t until high school that I’d learned the truth about him and my dad, or some of it. There was always more to the story, or so I’d learned with time. But by the time I was learning more than I wanted to about that part of my dad’s life, I was getting ready to head out of town.

It wasn’t that important for me to go digging and I’d pretty much put it out of my mind. I had no intentions on coming back here after I finished school, though dad didn’t know that. Now I have that guilt to deal with, because he’d died before I had a chance to tell him any of it.

On top of everything else, I’m here now. In this place, with this man, and he’s the only thing standing between me, and whatever mess dad had left behind. All my life I was told to steer clear of him, now I’m in his house and my dad seemed to think that this is where I needed to be. Color me confused.

I wasn’t as green as everyone thought. Sure dad had kept me in the dark about a lot of his dealings, but people talked. I’d known for a long time that my dad was more than the businessman he’d always portrayed himself to be.

Most dads didn’t go to the office wearing colors and riding a bike. And they certainly didn’t let their beards grow down to their chest and wear skulls on their fingers. But it was all I knew from birth, so I never questioned. But the older I got the more I heard.

I’d grown to dislike the things I was learning about dad and our lives. The thought that the money I enjoyed came from the blood of others wasn’t something I savored. But when I’d brought up the rumors to dad he’d been pissed. It was the first time I’d ever seen him so mad at me.

He’d tried reassuring me that it was all lies, but the seed had been planted and from then on all I wanted was to get out. It wasn’t easy doubting whether or not your own dad was a murderer. That he’d killed his best friend. I didn’t hate him, I couldn’t, but he wasn’t the same man I’d always known. Now he was gone and I guess I will never know the whole truth.

Now with all this stuff going on I was a little afraid I’d learn something that might burst my bubble. I may know more than I should but that didn’t mean I didn’t love dad, or that I’d readily believe the worse of him. But I knew before this whole mess was over I wasn’t going to be the same innocent he’d tried so hard to keep me.

I moved around the sparse room touching things for something to do. I was tired and wary, but too wound up to go to sleep. I ran without grabbing anything more than my purse, too scared to hang around for what came next.

From the conversation I’d overheard, I had no doubt that had I stayed, I’d be the victim of rape before night’s end. When Sanchez had assured the mystery man that he would make me his no matter what it took, I knew there was only one way he would achieve that. He knew that I couldn’t stand him. I’d never been good at hiding my distaste for him. And even when he’d turned on the charm, I could see right through his greasy smile.

Dad had been oblivious, or so it seemed. But he had to have come to his senses, why else would he send me to his enemy for shelter? What did that letter say? If I’d been thinking, I would’ve read it before giving it to him. But I’d only found it minutes before hearing the voices and then after that, the only thought on my mind was getting the hell out of dodge.

I opened drawers but they were all empty and then the bathroom was calling. I snuck out of the room after looking down the hallway to where the glow from the kitchen light could be seen. I found the bathroom and took care of business before heading back.

There was a door opened to a room that looked lived in. I guessed it was his bedroom from the rumpled bed and the book on the table. I looked back once before stepping inside. I wasn’t trying to snoop, I just realized I had nothing to sleep in and going it nude with that wolf loose was out of the question.

I found an old tee shirt and booked it out of there before I got caught. Back in the room, I slipped into the tee and felt rather strange about putting something of his that close to my naked skin. Where Sanchez made me cold and sick to my stomach. Gavin Stone left me way too hot for comfort and having something he’d worn rubbing against my nipples made my stomach hurt in a whole different way.
