Each time that fuck heard my name he was reminded of my old man since we had the same name. I’d put the Stone name on the grocery store I’d opened, on the ice cream parlor where the kids hung out every evening after school and even got the mayor who could be bought for a price to name a street after him.

Each time one of the locals sung the praise of my crew, it was like a thorn in that fucker’s side. He couldn’t make a move in this town without seeing my dad’s name or hearing about his son.

I’d done that, another deliberate move on my part before the piece de resistance. He spent more time worrying about me than I did him. He didn’t know what my next move was going to be ever. But I always knew. I learned that shit in my mother’s milk.

There was one thing in those papers that ma had left out though. All these years she’d neglected to tell me that she was at the center of the beef between dad and Drexel.

The kid was keeping herself busy reading one of the psychological thrillers from my shelves. She picked her head up when I walked in and I kept moving towards the safe. I wasn’t worried about her seeing the combination, I change the shit every other day and it has more safeties on it than The Hague.

“I’m bored in here.”

“What is it that you’d like to do princess, windows? Did you see a sign out there that said entertainment?”

“But I saw women out there.” I looked towards the window where she must’ve been looking outside. “Listen kid, you have people after you, someone already came to my house in the middle of the damn night. I don’t know if they have orders to bring you in dead or alive and I’m not risking my men or any of the women out there just to ease your boredom. You came to me for help, I’m doing the best I can. That not good enough for you, you know where the door is.”

“Would you stop threatening me with that? We both know if you weren’t going to help me I would’ve been long gone already.”

“You’d think so, but guess again. If we’re doing this we do it my way. That means no whining no bitching and less of your damn lip.” She had a point, I could’ve taken her to the workshop with the women but I wasn’t sure she’d get the reception she was expecting.

Most of those women weren’t too fond of little princesses with uppity attitudes and she was both. I couldn’t waste time busting up fights between them with all this shit she and her sperm donor had dropped in my lap.

I wanted to call ma but I needed to work some shit out myself first. I don’t think she’d been lying to me, maybe she had her reasons for not sharing that part of the story with me, but I find it odd all the same.

Speak of the devil. I heard her mouth before I saw her. She came barging into my office, gave the kid a glare and dropped a bag on my desk. The kid took one look at the logo on the bag and that nose went up in the air.

“I hope whatever’s in there wasn’t meant for me. I don’t wear that cheap shit. Why can’t we go to my house and grab some stuff?”

“Why you ungrateful little bitch.”

“Takes one to know one…”

“Enough.” She was really starting to piss me off. “I’m not gonna tell you two again. And you, I warned you, I’ll give you this one because she started it, but you’re skating on thin fucking ice. One more and I don’t care who starts it I will leave your ass outside those gates and you’re on your own.”

“Now to answer your question, we can’t go to your house because it’s surrounded by your dad’s people and the undesirables they’re now in bed with. I will do everything in my power to get you back what’s yours, but it won’t mean shit to you if you catch a bullet in your head.”

“Ma thanks for getting these so fast I appreciate it. You, say thanks.” She grumbled out a thank you and looked in the bag. I guess it’s a safe bet she didn’t like what she saw inside and I saw why when she lifted the granny jeans and muumuu from the bag.

I covered my laugh because I didn’t want to encourage ma’s bad behavior, but I had to admit the shit was funny. “Come on kid, let’s go shopping.” I’d lost my fucking mind. Either that or guilt was getting the best of me.

“What, what’s wrong with what I bought?” This fucking woman. I guess it was too late to ask her to change. “Ma not even you would wear that shit.” I had another huffer on my hands. “I’m going out back with the girls, we have a big order to fill this week for that outfit in Texas.”
