I trail behind them a few steps. He bends low to Spencer as he gets in his car. I can’t hear their murmured conversation. When he finally drives away, I nearly collapse in relief. Something tells me that he won’t ever be around again.
There’s a knock on the glass, and I turn to see the boys in Greer’s truck. They don’t leave the safety of the vehicle until Spencer’s car is nothing more than a speck on the horizon. When they do, I hug Parker and put a hand on Chase’s shoulder. “You guys OK?”
They nod, both of them subdued.
“What did he say?” I ask when Greer finally walks from the end of the driveway back to us.
He glances at the boys. “Spencer said to tell you guys he was sorry for being mean to the three of you. He said he won’t be around anymore.”
“Really?” Chase asks, looking relieved.
Greer nods.
“We have your phone.” Parker passes it to him.
“Cool. Can you guys help me get the rest of the boxes down? After we get the truck loaded, we’re going to stop for pizza and donuts. Might have to stream that new action movie. The one with the soldiers.”
“Where they fight the bad monsters? Yes!” Parker punches the air.
The two of them start up the stairs to the apartment, but Greer calls Chase’s name. He turns back to my cowboy.
“You did well today,” Greer says.
I swear Chase grows ten feet tall right in front of my eyes. He’s been so desperate for approval, and just like that, Greer has given it to him. He’s always looking out for my guys. Seeing this today just confirmed I’m doing the right thing by moving in with him. He’s always going to keep us safe.
As soon as they’re back in the apartment, Greer turns to me. “Are you OK, sweet girl?”
I nod. “I know Spencer didn’t apologize. That’s not like him. What did you guys really talk about?”
He shrugs. “We just had a man-to-man chat about how I castrate my steers. Funny the accidents that can happen when you show up uninvited to a farm.”
I blow out a breath and bury my head in his chest. I like the way he fits against me, the way his beard tickles the top of my head. “I’m glad you showed up.”
He rubs my back in a soothing circle. “Any time you need me, I’ll show up. I love you, Evie. You’re mine. You and the boys belong to me. The four of us, we’re a family. That’s just how it is.”
I glance up at him, filled with wonder that this man could care for me so deeply. “I know we’re family. I feel it deep in my heart, the same way I feel all of this love for you. I’ve been scared for a long time.”
“I know, but you don’t have to be scared anymore. I’ll treasure your heart, protect it, and keep it safe. Always.”
I melt at his words. I know he’s going to spend the rest of his life loving me and the boys. We’ve finally found a home, and it’s right on the farm with this big, bossy cowboy.
Chapter 13
Greer
“Alright, the best two out of three,” Noah says as he tosses the ball into the hoop. It sinks, touching nothing but the net. We’ve spent the last hour playing basketball with Chase and Parker.
Barrett laughs. “No way, loser. Gonna be a long week for you three. Have fun mucking out those stalls.”
It was Noah and the boys against me and Barrett. It’s been three weeks since the boys and Evie moved in with me. We’ve transferred the boys to the elementary school in Courage, and they’re both doing well there.
Parker has made friends, and Chase, who was behind in all of his classes, is beginning to improve his grades. I think within a year or two, we’ll see him at the top of his class. We still haven’t gotten custody of the boys from the state. That’s going to take some time and effort, but we’ll get there.
“Just one more,” Parker pleads with me and Barrett.
The wind chimes on the back porch move, and I turn toward the sound. My girl is there, watering the plants and prancing around in her yellow sundress. Fuck, I love that sight. I love the way it hugs her curves. My mouth waters remembering the way she woke me up this morning with her lips wrapped around my cock. Coming down her throat was a hell of a way to start the day.
I turn to my brothers. They’ve already caught where my attention has gone, and Barrett sighs. “Yeah, OK, best out of three. But I get Parker on my team.”
Parker beams at him, delighted to have been chosen to be part of his uncle’s team. He’s the weakest basketball player here because of his age, but the guys will never let him know that.
