“Son of a bitch.”

“Something in me just snapped. I got in his face and started yelling at him. He shoved me. I broke his nose. He broke my wrist. It was ugly,” I admit. “Then he kicked us out. It was his place, so we left with the clothes on our backs.”

“Fuck, he did that to you?”

I blow out a breath. “In a way, it was a relief. Being around him, I always had to be so careful what I said or did. He’d get mad over the slightest thing.”

“I hate that you and the boys had to live like that. It won’t be that way anymore. You have someone in your corner now. Someone that will look out for you and your brothers.”

His words warm me, making me feel hopeful. It’s more than what he says. It’s the way he’s been showing me he cares about us. “I’m beginning to see that.”

I wake up the next morning, feeling rested for the first time in weeks. I’m alone in the bed and I reach for Greer’s side. Part of me is afraid he’s a dream. That he’s a hot cowboy my mind conjured up because life has been tough.

But then the smell of bacon and eggs hits my nose. I hurry out of bed, realizing that I’m still in my clothes from last night. I haven’t heard the sounds of Chase and Parker. They’re usually early risers. I don’t feel the need to run interference between them and Greer, the way I did with Spencer.

Hurrying into the kitchen, I spot Greer at the stove. He turns, giving me one of his smiles. It’s more than just the way the lines of his face relax. I love the way his eyes soften with tenderness. It makes me feel special. “Good morning. Did you sleep well?”

“Where are the boys?” I blurt out. They’re my first priority. They’re always my first priority in every situation. No one else has ever taken care of them the way I have.

He points to the window. “Outside.”

I cross the kitchen to stare out the window. The boys are outside like Greer said. But they’re with two guys I don’t recognize.

“That’s Noah and Barrett, my brothers,” Greer explains.

There are two hay bales on sticks in the middle of the yard, and both of my brothers are twirling lassoes while the men gesture at the ropes. The boys are laughing, looking like carefree kids. “They’re teaching them to lasso.”

“Seems like it,” he answers. “Good skill to have around this place. Now, sit. I almost have the biscuits done.”

I don’t like the idea of being far from him, so I hop up on the counter. It takes a moment to get my balance. I’m not dainty. “Come here.”

When he steps between my knees, I press my lips to his. He strokes his tongue along mine in slow, sensual glides, and I can taste the peppermint creamer that he puts in his coffee.

We’re both panting when he finally pulls away. He rests his forehead against mine. “You promised you wouldn’t steal my virtue.”

I reach for his t-shirt, tugging it free from his blue jeans. “That was last night. Besides, I’m feeling so much better this morning.”

He puts his hands over mine when I try for the button on his pants. “No, Evie.”

I instantly still. I don’t understand. He spent last night wrapped around me, and I felt how hard he was. Even now after our kiss, there’s a noticeable bulge between his legs. He wants this as much as I do. “What’s wrong?”

He cups my mound. “I already have this.” He puts his other hand on my chest, right over my heart. “What I want is this.”

Chapter 9

Greer

Evie looks fuckable, sitting on my kitchen counter with her kiss-swollen lips. My hand is cradled in the apex of her thighs. I can feel her feminine heat, and it’s everything I can do not to sink to my knees and eat her out right here.

But I’m playing the long game. It’s what I try to remind my cock which hasn’t stood down since the moment I first saw Evie.

She’s getting closer to trusting me, but she’s not fully there yet. I don’t just want her body. I want her heart. I want her to trust me to heal all of those broken places, to know I’m her port in the storm. The one person she can always count on.

She swallows hard and looks away. The intensity of what she feels for me scares her, but I can go slow. For Evie’s heart, I’d do anything.

Reluctantly, I pull my hands from her body. “Let’s have breakfast.”

I plate the food and set it on the table. She tries to sit in her seat, but I drag her into my lap. It’s sweet torture, feeling her heat through my jeans. Her pussy is so close I’m leaking into my briefs.
