Her own mouth pulled tight and she shook her head.
“Yes,” he mouthed again. When she didn’t move fast enough, he headed over to them, her glare burning him the whole way. When he got to them, he turned to Clark. “Do you mind if I talk to Monty for a minute alone? I have something personal I need to ask her. About me. Not her,” he lied.
“Not a problem,” Clark answered with a smile, tearing his hand away from Monty’s, even though she struggled keep hold of it. “I’ll be right here, honey, when you’re done.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek.
Rez rolled his lips under to make sure the wrong words didn’t slip out. He had to fight it, so he quickly grabbed her elbow and guided her to an empty corner, swinging her around until she faced him.
Monty sighed. Was her eye twitching? “You’re an asshole and I don’t trust you.”
Rez laughed and slapped a hand over his heart. “I’m wounded. You know I love you and only want the best for you…”
Her eyes were now narrowed to the point they were nothing but slits. “Bullshit. What are you up to?”
“Nothing. We hardly had the chance to pick his brain since you don’t leave his side. See if we approve of your choice.”
“I knew better than to leave him alone with you assholes. You’d try to intimidate him. Or compare dick sizes.”
“Speaking of dick sizes, Crew said nerds are hung. That true?”
“You’d have to find out for yourself.”
“I still don’t see it, Monty. What am I missing? The quiet ones always have something to hide. He have a secret kink? Is he a furry or something?”
Her brow wrinkled. “A furry?”
“Yeah, it’s a fetish where… Never mind. If you have to ask, then you answered my question. What’s his last name?”
“I’m not giving you that. I know you all too well. You will dig until you find dirt.”
“Okay, you mentioned he’s an actuary, whatever the fuck that is. So, where does he work? Nearby? In Pittsburgh? Greensburg?”
“No.”
“C’mon!”
“No, Rez. Fuck off.”
“Holy shit, you really like him.”
“Why are you surprised?”
“He’s the last person we could see you with. We’re concerned.” That was a good excuse, even though they were more nosy than anything.
“You think I’d date someone like you jackasses? I deal with alpha-holes all day at work. Prisoners who beat their chests and arrogant co-workers who think they’re God’s gift to women, then I have to deal with you fuckers. I don’t need that with the men I date.”
“We want you to be happy, that’s all.”
“Sure you do. Well, here’s a tip to making me happy. Leave him alone. I swear if you assholes chase him off…”
“Can we at least do a background check on him so we can be assured he’s not some serial killer and he’s not going to skin you and wear you as a winter coat?”
“If he needs a human winter coat, then he would’ve picked someone fluffier than me. I’ll hardly keep him warm.”
“What if he cooks you and eats you like Jeffrey Dahmer? That psycho was nerdy, too.”
“Then he’ll get a few good meals out of me.”
Rez sucked on his teeth. “You think our concern is a joke.”
“Because it is and you guys are just nosy bastards. I like the way he looks. I like the way he dresses. He’s sweet, caring and a gentleman. Everything you guys aren’t.”
Rez covered his fake yawn with a hand.
She whacked him in the arm. “Look, I appreciate that you all are concerned, if that’s true.” She tipped her head and widened her eyes at him. “But don’t you think I did my own research first?”
Rez’s head jerked back. “You did?”
“If you haven’t heard yet, we have a federal task force renting the third floor. They have these things called computers. You type in info and get info back in return.”
“Ha. Aren’t you hilarious? But… You had someone run him? Who?”
“Fuck that. I’m not giving you a name because one of you will grill that person for the info. And that’s not yours to have.”
Fuck. It was probably Nox. And Nox could keep secrets like a steel trap. “Monty…”
“No, Rez. This conversation is over. I’m happy, so drop it.” When she smiled, it was one Rez didn’t like. “Speaking of happy… What happened to your date? You sure kept a close eye on her during the two services. Why isn’t… Sapphire, right?… she here now? Did you already scare the poor woman away with your unfiltered yapper?”
“She had to work.”
Monty frowned. “Who can’t get time off for a funeral?”
“Someone who works for a dick.”
“Where does she work?”
“Where does Clark work?”
Monty pinned her lips together and sucked in a breath. “Fine. It’s not like she’ll be around long, anyway. You’ll do or say something stupid and she’ll escape under the cover of darkness.”
