Or he had been.
Until her.
Before Sapphire, he didn’t know what he wanted in a woman or a relationship.
Now he did.
As he watched Finn and Decker—both now in happy, committed relationships—walking out of the building and toward where they were parked, he quickly texted Sapphire again. Are you working tonight?
I am.
What time? he asked.
12-8.
She’d be done with work early enough that she could come over afterward. Mind if I stop in at the club?
For your job or to see me?
To see you.
The club’s open to the public, Rez.
He considered her answer for a few seconds before responding, I’m not a customer.
Of course not. Sleeping with a customer wouldn’t be smart. What I’m saying is, I can’t stop you from coming to the club.
He frowned at his phone. But you would if you could?
Did I say that?
No, she didn’t. But it was the way she said it that bothered him. Was she trying to scrape him off?
Or were they both too tired to be having this conversation?
His ass was dragging and she could still be half-asleep.
Go back to sleep. I’ll talk to you later.
Her answering text of, See you later, made him feel a bit better, but not completely.
Sapphire made her way around the tables, stopping at one on the way to say hello to a regular. Being a Wednesday, it wasn’t busy. Maybe two dozen men and one woman filled the tables and booths, as well as the vinyl bucket chairs that sat along the perimeter of the “thrust stage.”
She was due to go on that stage soon, but she spotted someone of interest in a booth in the far corner.
Rez.
Seeing him there, looking tired but still deliciously sexy, made her heart skip and then race.
And that reaction surprised her.
As well as the fact she had missed him for the short time he’d been away.
Another unexpected reaction.
After texting with him this morning, she’d fallen back to sleep and barely made it to work on time.
Since Taint wasn’t at the club yet when she walked in the back door—pigs would fly before the biker would ever come in early—it probably wouldn’t have mattered if she had been late.
At least to him. It mattered to her since she had a habit of being punctual, even for work.
When she arrived at Rez’s booth, he shifted over enough to give her room to slide in beside him. Once she did, she leaned over, gave him a quick kiss, then wiped the smear of red lipstick she left behind off his bottom lip with her thumb.
The grin he shot toward her warmed her all the way to her toes.
What was happening here?
“You good?” he asked, stretching a thick arm along the back of the booth behind her.
When she leaned back into his arm, he curled his hand over her bare shoulder. “I am. You?”
“I am now that you’re here.” He whistled softly as his eyes slid downward. “That’s one smoking hot dress, Phire. Your nipples seem happy to see me.”
“Not just my nipples,” she teased back.
Tonight’s attire was a black, tight and super short dress that showed off the length of her legs. The top was simply two bands of fabric crisscrossing her chest and tied behind her neck like a halter top. It left her midriff exposed as well as her back and of course, the fabric barely contained her double-D breasts.
“I’m glad you like it. It’s one of my favorites, but I think wearing it tonight was a waste since attendance is light. I should’ve saved it for the weekend.”
“I’m sure no one will mind if you wear it again this weekend.”
“True. They don’t really pay attention to the actual dress. They pay more attention to what it doesn’t cover.” Some dresses more than others brought in better tips. Tonight’s was one of them. While she normally wore long, sparkly dresses that were more on the elegant, but sexy side, she occasionally broke out her short, fun dresses.
“You’re also welcome to wear it over to my place tonight after work so I can help you out of it.”
“Is that an invite?”
“No formal invite needed. My door and bed are always open to you. Whenever you want to come, come,” he said with a wink and a gleam in his eyes.
“How did you sleep?”
“Better than expected thanks to me stuffing my gut full of my mother’s homemade arepas filled with scrambled eggs, cheese and black beans.”
She’d never been a black bean fan until one night she finally had a chance to taste his mother’s. Now she was obsessed.
Under the table, Sapphire dragged her long nails from the top of his denim-covered thigh down to his knee. “Last time I saw you, you were chasing T-Bone. I haven’t seen him since. What happened with that?”
He shook his head. “We had a little discussion with him about Sloane’s sister.”
