“I could leave one with them in case of emergency, but fuck that, I don’t want anyone having access to my place when I’m not there. Especially with my job.”

Made sense. He wouldn’t give anyone he didn’t know or trust a key to his place, either. Especially since he owned weapons other than the state police issued ones he carried on the job. Plus, he didn’t want anyone digging through all his personal and financial info. Even though all that shit was kept in a large gun safe, he would never risk it. Nova might not have the space for a big safe if she lived in a condo.

“So, when do we leave?”

Her eyebrows knitted together. “We?”

“I’m going with you.” That shouldn’t even be a question.

“You have to work at the gun shop today,” she reminded him needlessly.

“Kitten, I don’t have to do shit. I’m only an extra pair of hands that they’re not even paying, remember? This isn’t our real life.” Well, except for the sex part. That was pretty damn real.

She rolled her brown eyes. “No shit. But still…”

“I’m going with you,” he insisted again. “I’m curious to see how you live, anyway. You can tell a lot about a person by their place.”

“It’s not much since I’m hardly there. I could’ve rented but I figured buying was a better investment.”

“Come on, it will give me a peek into Nova Wilder’s life.”

“Why? To see if I pass muster to be fiancée number three?”

Hold up. “Do you want to be fiancée number three?” For fuck’s sake, his voice actually cracked asking that.

“It was a joke.”

“Was that supposed to be funny? Because if so, it missed the mark by a mile,” he echoed her from earlier.

She sighed and combed her fingers through her messy hair. “None of this is funny, Fletch. If my place needs any work, I’m not there to let a construction crew in to do the repairs. I’m stuck here in Shadow Valley and it’s at least forty-five minutes one way. I really don’t want to give strangers a damn key.”

“Then don’t. We’ll figure it out. But there’s no point in worrying about that until we get there and see what the fuck is going on. It might be only water stains that can wait.”

She chewed on her bottom lip. “Maybe.”

He squeezed her knee. “Ghost is gonna make his feral Kitten some coffee to domesticate her and a quick breakfast while she showers. ‘Cause I sure as fuck know you can’t function properly without a heavy dose of caffeine.”

“Fill travel mugs, too.”

“How the fuck you gonna carry that on my sled?”

“Fuck!”

They were not driving that untrustworthy piece of shit Durango all the way to Cranberry Township and back. They had taken it to meet up for a buy with a Demon one night during a thunderstorm and they were lucky he didn’t wrap it around a damn tree when it fishtailed because the tires were so shitty.

He’d have to talk to Crew about switching it out with something more reliable. And safe.

Especially if they were still undercover come winter because fuck if that death trap was making it anywhere in the snow, sleet or freezing rain.

And if he was going to die, it certainly wasn’t going to be in a damn Dodge.

Even though she’d been living in Shadow Valley for over two months, strangely, it didn’t feel like “coming home” when Fletch pulled the Harley into her assigned parking spot in front of her building.

They had decided to leave their cuts back at the apartment since they didn’t want anyone tying her to the Dirty Angels MC. No one in the complex knew what she did for a living and she preferred to keep it that way. She liked living in anonymity and it also kept her safe. She would greet her neighbors if they crossed paths but she never took the time to get to know them.

Fletch had also considered their safety by not only taking main roads and highways to her place in Cranberry Township, but secondary roads, too, despite it making the trip take a little longer. Again, being cautious didn’t hurt. She hadn’t asked him to do it, he decided on his own. She also caught him checking the mirrors many times to make sure they weren’t being tailed.

It was definitely a lot easier to be with a man with the same mindset, unlike the civilian men she’d dated in the past who couldn’t understand the reason for not allowing them to hold her dominant hand, the need for her to keep her head on a swivel in any public space, and her inability to sit with her back to the door.

If they insisted she was being paranoid, that was the last time she went on a date with them. It proved they didn’t care enough to understand her reasonings even after she took the time to explain them.
