And when Mel was out of the room, his mom offered him the ring. Of course, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
The stage lights caught the sharp lines of the emerald cut, making it sparkle. Just like Mel’s eyes.
Once she realized what she was looking at, her smile disintegrated and her lips began to tremble.
Suddenly, no one else existed in that room. Nor did the spotlight or the loud music.
It was only the two of them on stage.
“Melina Jensen, I was serious when I said I wanted you to call me husband.”
She pressed a shaky hand to her gaping mouth and her stunning blue-green eyes held a shine. “That’s your mom’s ring.”
“It is. She said she’d beat me with a ballet slipper if I bought you any other ring. She also said she can’t wait to call you daughter.”
Blinking quickly and sniffling, she whispered, “Finn…”
“That has four letters. The answer I’m looking for only has three.”
She fell from the chair right into his arms, pressing her lips to his. When she was done claiming his mouth, she whispered, “My answer is…”
He lifted his eyebrows.
“More than three letters.”
That was a relief, since the word no only had two. “So, will you marry me?
“Absolutely. There’s nothing I want more.”
He accepted that answer, just as she accepted the ring he slipped onto her finger.
Tonight was proof that life could be so damn unpredictable.
Especially when a simple undercover assignment managed to change the rest of his life...
For the better.
