Not only was the rent cheap, but to have access to a pool, too? She didn’t need anything more. “I don’t need to. I’ve seen everything I needed to see.”

“You’re that easy to please?” His spine snapped straight a second after those words tumbled from his lips.

His mind seemed to hang out in the gutter right next to hers.

Even so, she smothered her grin at how uncomfortable he looked. “I guess it doesn’t take much.”

He jerked his chin toward a shed. “He keeps all the pool equipment in there, along with the rest of the shit needed to lounge around the pool.”

“Awesome.”

The backyard wasn’t large but it was fenced. It would be perfect for…

Shit.

“Uh… I forgot to mention something.” A big and important something.

He turned and his gray eyes locked with hers. “What?”

“Another reason I was having problems finding a place was that I have a roommate.”

His mouth parted. “Why would that matter?”

“My roommate has four legs.”

“A cat?”

She shook her head and grimaced. “A dog. Do you think Fletcher will mind me having a dog here?”

“I can ask him. What kind of dog is it?”

“A hairy one.”

Did he just suck on his teeth? Good.

“I meant size-wise.”

“Umm…” Shit. She really didn’t want to tell him.

His eyes narrowed on her. “What’s the breed?”

She might have just fucked up her chances at renting this house. With a damn pool, too! “Have you ever heard of an Irish Wolfhound?”

“You forgot about owning an Irish Wolfhound? How the fuck do you forget a dog of that size? Its shit alone probably weighs five pounds.”

That wasn’t quite true. “Do you want to ask Fletcher if it’s okay? He might not want a dog in his house.”

“Is it house-trained?”

“Yes.”

“Destructive?”

“No. He’s out of the puppy stage and he mostly sleeps. He’s actually pretty laid-back.” Unless he sees a rabbit. A cat. Or a squirrel. Or anything that runs.

“Is he aggressive?”

“He’s a lover, not a fighter. But his size alone scares people.”

“Then fuck no, I’m not saying shit to Fletch. Just make sure he doesn’t piss on the floor or destroy things. And pick up the yard.”

Damn. That was too easy. Though, she wasn’t sure if Crew should be making that decision for the homeowner. “Okay. Next question. Can I park in the garage?” She didn’t like to leave her baby out in the weather.

“I’ll ask him. I know he has his Harley and his truck in there but we can probably move his bike in front of his truck and out of the way to make room.”

“Wait, you’ll ask him about the garage but not the dog?” she asked.

He shrugged.

Something was up. Crew really wanted her to rent this house for some reason. Could it be he was simply tired of coming over to check on it? Maybe. But he seemed to have some sort of ulterior motive and she doubted it was to make her life easier.

“C’mon. Let’s do a quick walk-through so I can get out of here.”

“Got a hot date or something?”

“Don’t you have a dog to walk?”

She grinned. “I pay a dog walker—actually, she’s one of the front desk clerks—to walk him mid-day. I’ll just have to find someone to do it around here if I end up working long hours.”

She followed him back into the house. On the left side of the house was two smaller bedrooms sharing a Jack and Jill bathroom and another bedroom with its own bathroom. To the right of the great room was a nice sized kitchen with a breakfast nook. On the right side of the house was the primary bedroom with its own huge bathroom with a very inviting whirlpool tub, along with a laundry room right off the garage.

As they headed back out, the two rooms off the foyer ended up being a small dining room on one side and what looked like a cozy theater room with a small wet bar on the other.

She could picture herself in one of the comfy-looking recliners with the lights off, her feet kicked up and munching on popcorn while she watched the latest blockbuster movie.

The house was perfect and worth a hell of a lot more than five hundred a month.

After Crew set the alarm, they both stepped back outside onto the front porch, and he locked the door.

“Will that be my key?”

His fingers tightened around it before shoving his hand deep into the front pocket of his jeans. He acted as if he was afraid she would try to snag it from him. “No, I’m hanging on to this one. I’ll grab one for you from one of the other guys.”

“Why would you need to keep it?”

“In case of emergency.”

Uh huh.

They headed back to their vehicles and once they stopped next to his bike, she asked, “So, what’s with the MC thing? You never explained.”

“The Plant isn’t only the headquarters for the task force.”
