“I’m sitting down, you knob, you can’t see shit.”
He just chuckles, and it’s odd to feel it shaking our shared body. I sigh. I’m not sure this is accomplishing what Lo-Ren hopes. Mostly, it’s just us exchanging insults. Or each of us looking at the little calendar in Lo-Ren’s phone, working out who’s going to be awake when and making sure we both get equal time with her. It’s all so. . . civilized.
Which is what I don’t get. When I’m in control, I can feel the power inside us. And if my brother was the self-absorbed, narcissistic, power-hungry asshole I always assumed him to be. . .
“Why am I still here?” I finally just ask it straight out.
“Ughhhh,” he makes a long-suffering noise and rolls his eyes in the mirror. “What the fuck is this, feelings hour?”
I stay quiet, not responding.
He shakes our head and then says, “Fine. You really want to know?”
“Yes.”
He sighs again. “You see how she looks at us. You think she’d look at me even half the same way if I’d shown back up after killing you? Everyone else only saw a monster, but she looked at me and saw more. So I could finally be more, okay?”
Wow. And damn. “I get it,” I say solemnly. “And I’m sorry for not giving you the benefit of the doubt sooner. We didn’t have to live so long with all that acrimony and suspicion between us that Father put there all those years ago. You’re a good man, and I see that finally.”
“Don’t start that now and make me regret keeping you around,” he says. Again, our tail smacks me in the face—or tries to.
I catch it and toss it away, standing up as I laugh. “Don’t be so predictable. Your enemy will see it coming a mile away. But you’re getting pretty good with the tail. So why don’t we see if Lo-Ren wants some company in the shower?”
“Finally, something worthwhile comes out of that mouth.”
I stalk into the steamy bathroom to surprise our woman, tail whipping excitedly behind us.
