I laugh at that and slide my phone back into my purse. “No worries. I already ordered you a Diet Coke.”
“You’re a goddess,” she says and takes a sip of it.
A few moments later, our server Susie stops at our table, and we order our meals—a turkey club with fries for Anna and a grilled chicken sandwich with a salad for me.
As Susie heads for the kitchen, Anna places her elbows on the table and rests her chin on top of her hands as she fixes her gaze on my face. “Okay, Ms. Avoidance. It’s time for you to spill the details about your Destin trip. Don’t think I haven’t noticed how you’ve been getting into school with just enough time to make it to your classroom and spending your free period doing work, of all things.” She rolls her eyes.
“I haven’t been avoiding you,” I fib while offering my most innocent face.
“Uh-huh, suuuure you haven’t,” she derides. “Spill it, sister. What happened in Destin?”
“Spill what?” I volley back. “I went to Destin. Got stuck with Mack as a roomie. And ended up slicing my foot open on a seashell. That’s it.”
“Ah, ah, ah.” She waves her index finger at me. “If that were the case, I’d have seen you more than once this week. Plus, I can tell by the way you look.”
Instinctively, I paw at my hair, and she smiles. I scowl. “I don’t look any different.”
“Sure, you do. You have the sex glow.” She waves her hand in front of my face theatrically like it’s some kind of proof.
“What?” I exclaim on a laugh, my cheeks suddenly feeling very warm. I smack her hand away and sit back in my seat.
“Come on. Don’t play coy. I’m not afraid to hear about a little anal play.”
“Anna!”
“Katy,” Anna challenges back. “Tell me now, or I’m going to keep shouting every embarrassing thing I can think of.”
My eyes narrow, and she proves her muster immediately. “Double penetration! Nipple pinching! Puss—”
“Okay, okay, chill. I’ll tell you.”
I mean, this is my best friend, and the best friends’ rulebook adamantly states that you tell each other everything. I might as well get it over with.
“Things did happen in Florida. And on the way back from Florida. And they might’ve happened two days ago in the auditorium, but that’s all that will happen.”
“Holy shit, I knew it!” She reaches out with her index finger and pokes me in the shoulder. “I knew all that sexual tension would eventually come to a climax!”
“What sexual tension?”
“The two of you have been in enemies-to-lovers foreplay since the moment you met,” she answers. “Hell, it even made me horny sometimes just watching you guys interact in the teachers’ lounge.”
“You are off your rocker! I hated him.”
She laughs like a damn hyena. “Well, you sure as hell don’t hate him now. I’m just disappointed I wasn’t there to see the shift of the tide.”
“You’re sad you weren’t there to watch us have sex?”
“So, it was full-on sex then, huh?” She waggles her eyebrow. “How many times?”
“Too many times,” I admit on a groan.
“And…” She pauses and leans closer to me, even dropping her voice to a whisper. “Were my predictions correct?”
Good with his mouth and a big cock.
All I can do is close my eyes and nod.
“Hell yes!” Anna whoops in delight. “I knew that man was good in bed. It’s written all over his handsome face. Gah! I am so happy for you! After the bullshit Ricky put you through, you deserve to have some good sex.”
“No need to get all crazy about it,” I say by way of trying to calm her randy ass down. “It was just a vacation fling. It’s not going to be a regular thing.”
“Why the hell not?”
“Because this is Mack Houston we’re talking about. For starters, he’s my coworker, and he’s the last guy you get in a relationship with.”
“Who said anything about commitment?” Anna retorts. “I’m not saying to marry the guy. I’m saying to have some damn fun.”
“But I work with him…”
“Great. Easy access. Just don’t bang him during school hours, and you’re all set.”
I cringe over the fact that I almost did that two days ago in the damn auditorium.
“Wait…” She pauses, narrowing her pretty brown eyes at me. “Don’t tell me you actually did the dirty in—”
“No,” I cut her off before she can say it out loud. “It did not get that far.”
Anna squeals. “Holy hell, my best friend is finally letting her little floozy out. I flipping love it.”
“You’re a terrible influence, you know that? You shouldn’t be condoning this type of behavior.”
“But see, that’s exactly why you’re friends with me. You need me to encourage you to shake up your Marie Kondo life so you can give in to being a little bad sometimes.”
I wish I could say that I think she’s completely nuts, but there’s a part of me that wonders if Anna is right. Would it really be wrong to have a little more fun with Mack?
