Roman lets out a heavy sigh, looking at the blood that’s soaking into the small cracks between our floorboards, shaking his head. “That’s the fourth time this month we’ve had to get them replaced,” he says, turning back to look at me as I sit up on the dining table, pulling my blouse back on. “Are you sure we can’t do marble tiles throughout?”
My lips press into a hard line, considering the options. “But I really like the floorboards,” I tell them, knowing damn well I’ve got the short straw here. All three of the guys prefer tile floors, but I insisted, and so far, it’s biting me on the ass. “Can’t you just refrain from killing people in my house?”
“What?” Marcus mutters, sounding offended. “And take away the spur-of-the-moment magic? It’s no fun if we have to escort them out first. They have time to scream then.”
“I thought you liked it when they scream,” I throw back at him.
“No,” he says, stepping back into me and bracing his hands on either side of my thighs, caging me in. He drops his lips to mine, gently brushing across mine in a swift kiss. “I like it when you scream, preferably with my name on your lips.”
“Oh really?” I drawl, my hand rising to his chest as my stomach begs for lunch. “I thought you preferred it when you had me on my knees, my ass in the air and your hand twisted around my hair, pounding into me from behind.”
A growl rumbles through his chest, so deep that anyone would think it might have been the wolves. “Fuck, Shayne,” he murmurs. “That’s exactly how I’m going to take you tonight, and you better be fucking ready for me in that red lingerie I like.”
“Only if I get to show you what else I can do on my knees first.”
Roman rolls his eyes as Levi strides out of the room, already on the phone to our builders . . . or maybe it’s the cleaning crew who’ll need to be here before the builders. After all, not everyone is quite okay with our particular line of work, and our builders are far too skilled to scare off, especially when we need them so much.
Marcus takes my waist and lifts me off the dining table before helping me straighten my clothes, while Roman strides across the room to the kitchen where his keys lie on the island counter. “Come on,” he says. “We’re taking you to lunch, and then we can figure out exactly how we’re going to play this Dragoni bullshit.”
Bracing my hand on Marcus’ shoulder, I step into my heels before grabbing my purse and hurrying after Roman, Marcus’ hand at my lower back. We find Levi already out by the car, pacing back and forth as he argues with whoever he’s on the phone with, and the argument doesn’t last long before Levi gets exactly what he wants.
I hurry down the stairs that lead to my wide circle driveway, knowing damn well Roman will drive off without us if we keep him waiting. He’s not the kind who enjoys his time being wasted, and he’s more than happy to leave our sorry asses behind if we do, even if it means putting the Dragoni game plan together by himself.
Within seconds, we’re flying down the long driveway toward our front gate, fighting over where to go for lunch. Soon enough, a wide smile stretches across my face as we pull up outside my favorite Thai restaurant.
We come here enough that the moment we walk through the door, the restaurant knows to offer us the private room in the back, the one with the windows that give us a perfect view of the street and around the corner so we are able to watch our backs at every minute. We don’t often opt to eat out, but since the boys fought for their freedom, I’ve been doing what I can to try and give them some semblance of a normal life, especially now that we have Sebastian to think about.
Levi orders for us, knowing all of our preferred choices, and before the waiter has even walked away, Roman is diving straight into war tactics, going over all of our options to ensure we come out on top. Though it won’t be hard. Zeke wasn’t lying when he said the Dragoni family is young and powerful, they couldn’t have gotten this far without it, but in comparison to the empire we’ve built, they’re nothing but leeches who need to be dealt with.
We each give our input, but the moment our meals arrive, all talk of business falls silent as we simply enjoy being in one another’s company. My stomach is almost bursting from my lunch when something out the window catches my gaze, and a fond smile pulls at my lips.
