“It’s nice to have time to put my feet up and relax.” Cora sighs. “Between soccer, gymnastics, and dance, I’m on the go nonstop.” My daughter-in-law sighs. “Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t give it up for the world, but my girls keep me busy.”
“I know what you mean.” Mabel reaches for her glass of iced tea. “I’m glad we decided to stop after Teddy because I have no idea how I’d keep up with more than one child.”
“Bearly children live to keep us on our toes.” Bethany rubs her huge belly. “When Clay talked me into another baby, he promised I’d get a calm, easy child, and I’m holding him to it.”
All of us glance over at her with varying looks of disbelief on our faces. I can’t believe my intelligent daughter-in-law fell for that.
“Good luck with that,” Cora mumbles under her breath. “I think you got hoodwinked with that promise.”
“The grandkids have been so well-behaved.” I change the subject before the sisters start arguing. “I wish my sons would take lessons from their children and stop giving each other hell.”
“I think you have a better chance of winning the lottery.” Cora glances over at me and laughs. I’ve always been close to all three of my daughters-in-law, but Cora and Wilder live closest to us so we’ve developed a special relationship. Especially after Bethany and Clay moved all the way to Glacier Pass. “Without buying a ticket,” she adds, and we all laugh.
“Don’t let the men hear you talking about gambling.” Mabel glances around, making sure none of the men are within earshot. “Someone will end up dancing naked under the full moon or something equally as embarrassing.” So true. My boys can’t resist a good wager, and their bets keep getting more outrageous as they age.
I look around the back yard and notice Papa Bear giving out another round of suckers to the kids. “Excuse me while I straighten out my mate,” I tell the girls before rushing over to stop him. My mate of forty years gives me a big smile when I step next to him.
“The kids aren’t going to sleep tonight if you keep giving them all that sugar,” I insist, but my mate ignores my warning. He leans over to kiss me before turning back to the grandkids.
“It’s our last day of vacation,” Papa Bear grumbles as Clay, Thorne, and Wilder come strolling up with fishing poles in their hands.
“We’re going fishing one more time,” Thorne tells Papa Bear. “Do you want to come with us?”
“Heck yes,” my husband readily agrees and rushes to the storage closet to grab his favorite fishing pole.
As the group walks around the corner, I hear Wilder ask, “Who wants to take part in a little wager? Whoever catches the fewest fish has to…”
I miss what my youngest son wants to wager, but I’m sure it’s embarrassing. Oh well, I’m sure we’ll all find out soon enough.
