He could still taste her on his lips as he managed to roll the condom on.

He was glad he still had half a brain to remember to put the damn thing on because his whole being was focused on her.

But then hadn’t it been since that moment she’d walked back into town and his world had amped up to Technicolor?

She’d said yes and he was going to convince her to keep saying yes. All he needed was a little charm, a bit of luck, and a whole lot of pleasure.

He pulled her up. The last thing he intended to do was fall on her and have everything end in mere moments. No. He had a feeling she’d neglected this part of her life, that she hadn’t had a lover who indulged in her. He intended to make her need him. Even if it was only in bed.

All of his life he’d been the good guy, the responsible one, the dependable one. He was going to show her the good guy could also be a bad boy.

She looked up at him with sleepy eyes. “Is this where you bring all your dates? Your booty call room?”

He needed to make things perfectly clear to her. “I haven’t had a woman up here in years.” He moved to the bed, lying back and helping her straddle his hips. “I bought those condoms today and put them up here in the desperate hope that we would get to a place where this was a good idea.”

She sat back on her heels, that soft, wet part of her so close to where he needed it to be. “But you think it’s a bad idea.”

He was so deeply aware that he could still lose her. It might be for the best. They could reset and go to Guidry’s and they could work on their relationship before they got physical.

Her skin was so soft under his hands. “It’s a great idea.”

One hand came out, brushing down his chest. “I’m serious, Quaid. Why do you think this is a bad idea? Because you don’t want people to know we’re involved?”

He flipped her over because it was obvious he needed to take charge. When she was on her back, he rubbed himself against her, every move getting him harder. “Baby, everyone thinks we’re already sleeping together. You confronted my brother in the middle of Main Street looking all soft and sweet in your PJs, and not a person in town is thinking I let that gorgeous woman sleep in the guest room. I would like everyone to know we’re together, but I think you might use me for sex and then get some revenge by forgetting my name in the morning.”

The sweetest smile made her face glow. “That would be fun.”

Maybe he’d been wrong. Maybe this was exactly what she needed. Intimacy. He pressed up, bringing them together, biting back a groan. She felt absolutely perfect. “That would not be fun. Not in any way. This means something to me. You mean something to me.”

Her legs wound around his waist, her arms circling his neck until she was wrapped around him. “You mean something to me, too. Kiss me, Quaid. I need this so badly. I need you.”

It was all he wanted to hear. He lowered his lips to hers, giving her what she needed. He kissed her as he pulled out and thrust back in, loving the way her silky heat encased him. He kissed her while he made love to her.

He was in far too deep, and it no longer mattered.

He kissed her until she groaned against him, tightening around him and bringing him over the edge with her.

When he fell against her, he held her for the longest time and prayed this could last.

“Do you want to get dressed?” An hour later, Quaid was still in bed, his arm cradling her to his chest. “I owe you a steak. You never told me how court went.”

“No, because I was too upset about the library.” She rubbed her cheek against his chest. “I don’t suppose we can get something delivered.”

“I can run across to the café, but the only steak they sell is Salisbury.”

She turned, her chin now on his chest and eyes on him. “I think I’ll stick to a burger and fries, but the idea of leaving this bed is not an ideal one. It’s nice here.”

He reached out and smoothed back her hair. “It is.” They’d spent the last hour making love and exploring each other’s bodies. Hugging. Kissing. Playing. It might be time to get serious. “Are you all right? Do you want to talk about it?”

She laid her head down again. “About what? The fact that my career is over or the fact that my marriage was a complete failure?”
