We’d entered a very small bedroom, and I pointed at the far wall. The two giant windows, like in the gallery, had a soft yellow curtain hung and swagged back on each side. Next to them was a small, elegant bassinet.
“This is the nursery.”
Jenna walked into the center of the room and did a slow circle, taking it all in. When she stopped, she was facing me once again. “Okay, Chase. Time for a real explanation.” She folded her arms across her chest, pushing up her tits and nearly distracting me.
After a sharp shake of my head, I focused on her gorgeous face. “Do you remember the day we met? Not when you were a child, but just before you came to the hospital the first time?”
“Yes.”
“I felt an immediate connection to you that day,” I admitted. “I could tell that you were young, but you’re very much a woman, Jenna. And my heart knew what my brain took a while to figure out.”
“Figure out what?” Her expression was mostly guarded, but her stance had relaxed, and her eyes held a spark of hope.
“That you were mine.”
“Yours?”
“Yes, sunshine,” I replied earnestly as I closed the distance between us without touching her. “Mine.” My mouth curled into a smile, and she softened even more. “Suddenly, I saw myself with a wife, a home, and a brood of adorable little kids that looked just like their mother. And the only woman I could see in that role was you.”
Jenna blushed, and I gave in to the desire to briefly trail one finger along her jaw. “Why are you just now telling me this?” she wondered.
“I’ve been waiting, sunshine. Waiting for your birthday because I don’t want anything stopping us when I officially make you mine.”
Her arms fell to her sides, and she took a step closer, bringing us nearly toe-to-toe. Her floral scent invaded my senses, and I felt almost dizzy with the rush of lust that slammed into my body. Fucking hell, we needed to get out of this place before I lost all resolve.
“Why?” she finally asked after an extended silence.
“Why?”
“Why do you want me? Do you just want a young thing to marry and knock up? A woman to look good on your arm when she isn’t popping out that brood of kids you want?”
Scowling, I grabbed her biceps and lowered my head until our faces were inches apart. “Don’t ever talk about yourself like that again, Jenna. You are everything to me. I want a wife, someone to grow old with, to have a family with, and all that goes into a happily ever after. But none of that will mean anything unless that person is you.”
Jenna’s eyes searched my face for a few long, agonizing moments, then she murmured, “More than the air you breathe.”
“That’s right, sunshine. I love you more than anything.”
She gasped, then a bright, beautiful smile split her gorgeous face. “You love me?”
“What the fuck do you think this has all been about, sunshine?” I asked in exasperation. “Of course. I fucking love you.”
“I fell in love with you, too,” she blurted in a rushed voice. “That day. On the street.”
I grinned but didn’t get a word out before she continued. “And every day, I fell a little bit more. When I heard those nurses…and then you said you were in love and getting married…I thought I’d been foolish, hoping you would see me as a woman someday. Want me as much as I wanted you.”
My jaw clenched as I forced myself to release her and take a few steps back. “You have no fucking idea how badly I want you, Jenna,” I growled. “But we’re going to wait. Six days, sunshine. Your birthday is in six days. Then we can officially be together.”
Her plump lips turned down into a little pout, and I squeezed my eyes closed as I spun around. “Do not make that face at me, sunshine. Now get your ass in the car. We need to get the fuck out of here before I lose my shit.”
“What happens if—”
My eyes snapped open, and I looked back at her over my shoulder. “Ask me again on your birthday, baby,” I told her in a low, dangerous voice.
“Okay,” she practically squeaked, then rushed from the room, but not before I caught the smirk on her lips.
I grinned. My sunshine had more spitfire in her than people realized. Something told me that with the right persuasion, she would turn wild in bed.
When we were back in the car, I gave myself permission to at least hold her for a while. It wasn’t like I would fuck her for the first time in the back of my Town Car. Especially not if it was her first time.
I slipped my arm around her waist and tucked her into my side. “Sunshine?” I murmured.
