“Adalynn,” I say cautiously.
She lifts her hand to her hair.
“I swear, Adalynn, that mouth of yours is—”
I snap my attention to Cash Tucker as he runs right into the back of her, his hands working to close his belt buckle.
Adalynn’s cheeks turn brighter than the jam in the cherry turnovers tempting me from the display case.
“Fu-freak,” Cash says as he locks eyes with me. “I’ll, um… see you later.”
We both watch Cash leave the bakery. Adalynn is looking everywhere but at me when I turn my attention back to her.
“I’m not explaining myself to you, Chase Woodson.”
“I didn’t say a word.”
Silence fills the space between us, and I know Adalynn enough to know she’ll stew in what I’ve borne witness to until all the information bubbles up and over.
“If you tell Madison, I’ll hate you forever.”
“You might want to get a jump on that, Ads. I don’t keep secrets from her.”
She chews the inside of her cheek.
“Well, that’s a sign of a healthy relationship, I guess.”
“It’s no big deal,” I assure her. “We knew you guys were going to end up together for a while now.”
She clears her throat, her back straightening. “We aren’t together. But if you can’t ask your best friend to get you pregnant, then who can you ask?”
