“This is it,” Shay whispered. “When we don’t look, they advance. Get ready.”
He was right. Another glance out into the water confirmed it. They were moving closer when we weren’t looking. A few more feet and we’d see who they were. I’d learned Ty was a fast swimmer. I already knew Reese was too. And Walker…
“I love this community so fucking much,” Lane whispered.
Not the time, dude!
I gave up on my heart. It pounded furiously, and things were obviously just gonna get worse from here on out. And to prove my point, my brain about exploded when we spotted two figures in the jungle.
“Who—”
“Colt and Lucas gotta be here.” I rushed out the words and tensed up beyond what I’d thought was possible. Fucking Sadists! They were making us expend our energy before the fight even began.
Then I noticed the six men wore clothes. Black clothes and balaclavas that covered their faces.
They advanced in unison, step by step, and I literally felt my humanity leave my body. Shay, Lane, and I sank into crouching positions, and we spoke in hushed breaths.
“No holding back.”
“Fight for your lives.”
“Use your fists.”
“Kick and bite.”
“We need space,” I blurted out. “They’re crowding us. We should charge—”
“At those two over there.” Shay nodded at two men on the beach. “Now.”
We bolted. All three of us flew toward the two men, away from the spot we’d hidden the rock, and we didn’t stop until we crashed into them, sending us all to the ground.
“Check their pockets for cuffs or ties!” Shay barked out.
If only they didn’t immediately fight back. Goddammit. Just as I delivered a knee to the gut on one of them, the other knocked me over and grabbed Lane by the throat at the same time. I caught a quick glimpse of the man’s eyes and knew it was a Tenley. They didn’t make a single sound, though. Not even a grunt or a huff.
That very second, angry metal music pumped out from the jungle.
I came back swinging as Lane cursed and fought himself free. But then we weren’t alone anymore. Two other men arrived, forcing me to shift my focus. Lane and I had a task for Shay’s scene.
“Be on his side until you admit defeat. Protect him until you no longer can.”
“Get them away from Shay!” I growled at the exertion and finally got free from whoever had been trying to pin me down.
Lane and I attacked the two men who were on Shay, just long enough for him to wrench away from the faceless—okay, that was quickly getting old! I shoved at one of them, then reached for another and pulled the face-covering over his head, revealing Reese with an expression that screamed feral. It felt like my heart skipped a beat at the sight of him. But I recovered quickly, and Lane followed my lead.
“Run!” he shouted at Shay. “Hide the rock!”
While Shay hightailed it, Lane and I threw ourselves to the wolves, but not all of them. Reese and who I assumed was River went after Shay. One by one, we managed to remove the balaclavas, and the Tops gave up on their silence.
Two strong arms wrapped around me from behind, and I fucking lost it. I cursed and started thrashing for all I was worth. It was Ty, and he got help from Colt. Fucking Colt. Couldn’t he just enjoy the night in Key Largo with his men? I gnashed my teeth and kicked him when he tried to get closer, right in the knee, then in the stomach when I threw myself backward.
Ty went down with a gritty oomph, and I scrambled to my feet, chest heaving, black spots filling my vision. And I didn’t linger. I darted after the Tenley triad in hopes of catching up and helping Shay. This was for his sake. They wanted a vicious takedown scene, so that was what we were gonna give them.
“Get him!” Walker yelled.
It was one of the biggest adrenaline rushes I’d ever experienced. I ran as fast as I could, staying closer to the water’s edge where the sand was more compact. My entire body throbbed with the bruises I’d wake up with tomorrow. Not a single pain registered, but I knew it would soon. I could still feel hands and fingers on me, giving every square inch of my skin its own pulse.
“Come at me, motherfucker!” I heard Lane shout. “Don’t you know steroids are illegal?”
My boy was down. I didn’t even look behind me. He had Ty and Walker or Colt to worry about. I had… I didn’t know. I just knew at least one of them was chasing me. Possibly two.
Christ, two sadistic Tops per sub. How fair.
Farther up the beach, one of the Tenleys caught up to Shay and brought him down on the sand with a kick that gave Reese away. He was Shay’s martial arts match, and the two knew how to go at it.
