“All I have known from the moment I met you is that I had to have you. I was paid. I was given power. I was allowed to raise armies and command beasts of the dark. I never questioned why.”
“Nine years. Nine years and you never questioned why.”
“I wanted you.”
“You became obsessed,” she says. “Blinded by lust and possession. The devil’s most powerful impulses commanded you, and now you find yourself here in the light of day, standing on bloodied ground, in an empty prison with a collared angel and no idea why.”
When she says it that way, I do sound like a puppet.
“I told you. The reason for this facility to to shield the world from angelic interference.”
“Right. So. The sort of thing the devil might want. Where is he?” She looks around, then spins about with her arms outstretched. “Come out, come out, wherever you are!”
“You always were a smart girl,” the devil says, stepping out from the shadows with his medicine bag and dark smile.
“I was,” Katie agrees. “You’ve gone to a lot of trouble this time, Luke.”
The devil, who suddenly has a name, grins broadly. He is suddenly handsome, suddenly taller, suddenly broad and powerful in appearance. His hair remains in the widow’s peak, and his dark eyes are framed with rough brows.
“A lot of trouble,” he agrees. “And now you have submitted to the seed of my envoy, angel. You have been tainted. Does it feel good, to be pleasured by my servant? You seemed to enjoy your ravaging.”
“What is happening?” The question emerges from my mouth, sounding as stupid out loud as it did when it was in my head.
“What is happening is you have spent the better part of a decade doing the work of the devil in order to trap angels in this prison of his design, apparently never questioning your own motives beyond the obvious,” Katie says.
“Don’t mind her, Starlight. You have been a good and faithful servant, entirely obedient, and so naturally cruel besides. I have few foot soldiers I value so highly.”
The devil’s praise is not as gratifying as it might have been. I may not be the first soldier to suddenly ask themselves on what grounds their atrocities have been committed, but I am much displeased because this is the second time I have found myself in this precise position.
“What have I done?”
The devil laughs. Katie does too. I have the uncomfortable sensation of being in the middle of an inside joke that I have never been party to.
“Aw, you’re cute.” Katie smirks at me. I do not like this tone on her. It makes me want to take her over my knee and thrash her pretty ass back into proper submission. I may yet do that. But she is still talking, laying out my foolish foibles. “You forget, Luke is an angel. A fallen angel. He is always seeking to recruit. What you’ve built here is not so much a prison, but a recruitment center.”
“Precisely, Katya! You will stay here until you agree to join my legion. Starlight will amuse you, I am sure, providing ample entertainment of the dark kind your tastes prefer. And when you are ready to swear loyalty to me, you will be endowed with the powers of Hell.”
“Sounds like such a great deal,” Katie says, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “I can’t wait to give up my heavenly heritage in order to embody evil.”
“You’ll resist for now, but eventually you will submit. It is your nature to submit, Katya. First to Starlight, and then to me. When his cock is deep inside you and your lips part, you must feel my essence entering you as well. When you fuck him, you fuck me.”
“Kinky,” she says, deadpan.
The devil laughs. He is in no hurry to seal this deal. He stalks toward us both with the handsome face he has hidden this entire time. I find myself staring at him with a dissociated sensation, as if what is happening is not really happening, and yet it absolutely is. I feel powerless, muscleless. I feel weak, and influenced.
His dark eyes settle on me. “Of course, I can’t have you aware of this, Starlight. There is still some goodness and chivalry left inside you. Better you don’t remember why. Yours is but to do,” he glances over at Katie. “Or die.”
Katie
The devil departs. Starlight shakes himself, blinking as if he has just become conscious. As I suspected, he is glamoured, unaware of precisely what and who influences him. “Did you hear something?”
“No,” I sigh. “Nothing at all.”
I assumed this was a human-made prison for angels. But it is much worse than that. It is a demonic prison on a human plane being used to capture those of angelic blood. Starlight may be a man, but he is absolutely soaked in demonic power.
