“Who is he?” I looked at Lo who’d asked that question.
“He makes bikes, at least that’s the man his neighbors know. Those who know him know he’s one dangerous fucking animal when crossed. Like I told you he was never military he has no control and he would kill without a thought if you fuck with his family.”
“And his kid is in the book.”
“Yeah.” Colt returned then and took his seat again. I didn’t trust the calmness one fuck. He asked for the bird’s name and made a call before the other two men I’d called in showed up. Blade and Jake knew a lot more about the trafficking game than the rest of us so I figured they could give us a hand.
By the end of the night we had a working plan of action in place, but that didn’t make me any less nervous. My place was crawling with military and outlaws all I needed now was the asshole sheriff showing up here with his shit.
“Colt you doing okay brother?”
“The fuck you think? Some asshole put my kid in a flesh book and I’m sitting here cooling my heels. If this shit don’t go right you’re gonna need to move.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I’m gonna blow this fuck to kingdom come and you know I’m not kidding.” Yeah I know. That’s what I’m afraid of.
“Colt I’m asking you to let us handle this shit the right way. You go cowboy on us it can get FUBAR and then we’ll be nowhere.” He didn’t answer which meant he wasn’t listening to shit I say. I left it alone and clapped him on the shoulder before heading out to find Lo.
“We’ve got trouble.”
“Yeah, what’s that?”
“Lyon, Colt, he’s gonna go rogue.”
“How you figure?”
“Because I know him, that whole time in the club he was reading us. Gathering Intel. I warned you that he don’t play by the rules. We gotta keep an eye on him.”
“Lookie here; looks like I got me a rogue of my own.”
I followed his gaze across the yard to the darkened corner where Colt was in deep conversation with Tyler one of the SEALs.
“Well fuck.”
“No worries, we have a pretty good idea where they’ll be heading. Let’s stay on alert and meet them halfway if it comes to that.”
“I should call his fucking wife to leash his ass.”
“I don’t think that’s gonna work this time. While he was studying us I was studying him. He might not have seen battle but that is one badass soldier.”
“More like a mercenary.”
That night shit went from bad to worse. We learned that one of the families involved, the Porters, had fucked with Colt’s wife years ago and though he didn’t admit it, Colt had offed their son in retaliation. That would explain why his daughter was in the book. Then we learned that the book was old school and the fuckers had upped their game, they went digital. One of the SEALs found his woman in the lineup and shit almost went south.
After we calmed Cord down the best we could everyone headed to their beds for the night. I stayed awake counting down the hours until full dark. If Lyon made a move it would be then. She was asleep next to me wrapped up tight in my arms and all I could think about was my child growing inside her. Why was she in that book?
Was it The Fox, or her old man and the deal he had with Royce? There were way more questions than answers. Had Royce been in league with whatever was going on here and if so how much of a foothold did these fucks have in my town?
Up until now I had been operating under the notion that the shit was contained to me, and my family. Royce had killed my family to get my dad’s land or so I’d thought. But what if this was about me? What if The Fox had somehow got ahold of the names of the men who’d run him to ground and was hitting back now? That’s what Lo and his brothers thought, and I was inclined to believe them.
The thought made me sick to my gut. Royce was one thing, a man like Khalil aka The Fox was a more worthy opponent. He had a lot of power, which I’d thought couldn’t reach domestic soil, but somehow he’d found a way in. If this was true, then I had bigger problems than Junior and the asshole sheriff.
My phone beeped and I answered on the second ring when I saw the name on the readout. “Kat what’s up?”
“You tell me, is Colt still there with you? I can’t reach him.” She sounded panicked and I calmed her down as best I could before getting her off the phone.
The fact that she couldn’t reach Colt at a time like this could only mean one thing.
