They released each other, and Ace swiped at his cheeks, his face red, his eyes bloodshot. Shaw handed him paper towels so he could clean his face a little better and blow his nose.
“We’ll miss you,” I told Konrad. “And be careful. You’ve got a family back home waiting for you now.” I knew he didn’t have anyone but Shaw when he was in the military, but the guys had been back together for months now. It wasn’t just him to worry about anymore.
He had a family that loved him and wanted him home—safe and sound.
“I will,” he assured me. “Keep these fuckers in line, yeah?”
I snorted at the same time Jax muttered, “Fuck you, Konrad.”
“We’ll see you in a few months,” Cam told him. “Stay in touch when you can, yeah?”
Konrad nodded, and then Shaw stepped forward. They clapped their hands together before drawing each other into a quick, one-armed hug. “Be safe, brother.”
Konrad nodded. Arlo swung his keys around on his finger, looking at his watch. “We need to hit the road if you want to get there on time.”
Konrad sighed before turning to the door and picking up his duffel bag. Arlo followed him out the door.
Ace sniffled and headed up the stairs. I frowned after him. Jax tightened his arm around my waist. “He’ll be okay,” he quietly assured me. “He just needs some time alone.”
I nodded. Jax pressed a soft kiss to my lips and then released me, heading over to the bar to grab another one of Ace’s cupcakes.
