“We were seventeen. There was a group of us that used to hang out together. I was dating Misty’s best friend back then, my now wife, Cora. The two of them had been friends since the first grade and were always together. I knew from the moment I started dating Cora that there was something off about Misty, it was obvious to me and everyone else that Misty was jealous of her friend, but there was no getting that through my wife’s head at the time.”

“One weekend, Cora’s parents went away. They’d made her promise not to have anyone over, and she’d agreed since it was the first time they’d let her stay home alone. But, as teenagers do, we were all over there, about ten of us, as soon as they reached the town limits. We were drinking and partying, nothing too crazy. But for kids who didn’t drink much, it didn’t take a hell of a lot to get us plastered.”

“I remember that night Misty kept following me around with her eyes.” James’ face clouded with distaste as he recalled the events of that night and the weeks following. “That night, Cora and I went to her room to have sex, it wasn’t the first time, and I’m sure some of the others who were there were doing the same thing.”

“I didn’t think anything of it; like I said, it wasn’t the first time, but one of our friends started acting weird after that night. I didn’t know why until a couple of months later when Misty told me she was pregnant with my kid. I laughed my ass off because I knew I hadn’t touched her, but she gave me some story about me being too drunk to remember.”

“Although I knew it wasn’t true, I was scared. She made it sound so plausible that I started second-guessing myself. The first thing I did was make her take a pregnancy test right in front of me; she was telling the truth; she was pregnant. I had to tell Cora, even though I couldn’t remember sleeping with her, at that point, I had no choice but to believe her that I’d been so drunk that night that we’d had sex.”

“It almost broke Cora, and I’ve never felt so horrible in my life. Misty’s story was that she tried to stop me, but in my drunken haze, I forced her. Cora wanted nothing to do with me after that, and Misty was pushing hard for marriage, something that I wanted no part of, not with her.”

James shifted on his seat as all of the pent-up anger from back then came alive, and he felt that same murderous rage threaten to consume him. “After Cora broke up with me and word started to spread about Misty’s pregnancy, my friend Trevor, the one I told you had been acting weird, called and asked me to meet him. I was surprised to find Cora there when I showed up and when she started to leave, not wanting to be anywhere near me, he pleaded with her to stay.”

“Trevor was the only one among us to have a videophone at the time. The rest of us were still using cell phones, but he always had the latest because his dad is in tech. That night he showed us a video from that night. To this day, he doesn’t know why he did it, but I’m forever grateful that he did. On the screen, there were shots of us throughout the night goofing around. He even got one of Cora and I disappearing into her room.”

“It’s what he caught about an hour later that changed my life. Everyone had pretty much settled down by then; some people were even asleep at this point. I guess Misty wasn’t aware that he was awake since he was reclining on a chair behind the rest of them. Anyway, I can be seen leaving the bedroom and heading into the bathroom, but the surprising thing is that Misty left her place on the blanket on the floor and came to put her ear to the bathroom door.”

“She ran back to her place when I left, but then she got up and headed into the bathroom.” James grew uncomfortable at this point in the story while Detective Sparks was still trying to figure out where he was going with this. “He caught footage of her fishing around in the garbage for the condom I’d just tossed. What she did next, well… let’s just say, if I’d known then what I know now, I would’ve brought her up on charges.”

“Are you saying that she…”

“Yes, she shoved the condom up inside herself, and that’s how she got pregnant. I didn’t even know such a thing was possible, or I would’ve… not that I would’ve expected anyone I knew to do such a disgusting thing.” Detective Sparks had to admit to herself that she, too, had thought the story was just an urban legend.
