We left my bedroom and were immediately stopped, Shy letting out an excited “aww” and dropping to his knees.
“Eli,” I said, scratching my dog’s back as he showered Shy in morning licks. He had a plush evergreen velvet bed next to my door, in case he ever wandered over and the door was closed. We had found him sleeping outside the door on multiple occasions, and so I decided to have a bed placed next to it just in case.
Outside of the hall’s arching windows, I could see the snow-blanketed grounds more clearly. It hadn’t been a heavy snow, just enough to paint the landscape into a winter wonderland. I could see trails of footsteps cutting across where paths used to be, paws appearing where a cat must have crossed, leading up to a snow-covered oak tree.
I crouched back down and joined the cuddle puddle that formed between Eli and Shy, getting some dog kisses on my cheek, feeling like this truly was the most wonderful time of the year.
