Amy chuckled. “You’re always thinking naughty thoughts.”

“When I’m with you, I can’t control it.”

He finished her back and as Amy went to move, he let out a little tut. “You know, your arms are susceptible to sunburn, as well as your chest.”

She rolled her eyes, trying to grab the sunscreen, but he held it just out of her reach.

“Daniel?”

“What? I am not going to let you get sick from not taking better care of yourself. What kind of a boyfriend would I be?” He winked at her, proceeded to squirt more of the sunscreen onto his palm, and then waited, eyebrow raised.

She held her arm out for him. “I never knew you could be so thorough, Mr. Long.”

“I guess there is still a lot you need to learn about me.”

“Yes, I have a feeling there is.”

He couldn’t see her eyes through the sunglasses, but he had a feeling she was staring right at him. She hadn’t outright asked him about being a Reaper, but he had a feeling she either already knew or had a feeling he was one. The busted knuckles were an indication.

Daniel hadn’t said a word, but he did go to any call that was made and checked out every situation that appeared to be escalating. He did whatever he could to protect the town. It was what Nigel had told him to do when he had put him in charge.

On Nigel’s deathbed, the older man had asked him to always keep an eye on his Martha, to protect the town, and to make sure The Reapers never died.

He had promised that man everything, and he intended to make sure Lost Creek never got lost again. It was why he would check every problem himself, why he handled everything with an iron fist, and also why he took the time to train when Amy went to work at the café. He’d hit the irons even before Amy, but now he made sure to have a set routine. He never wanted anything to happen to his woman.

Rubbing the cream into her chest, he saw her chuckling.

“You’re being very thorough.”

He leaned in close, brushing his lips against her ear. “In case you didn’t know, I happen to like this chest very much and I also love the tits that are attached.”

She let out a startled gasp.

“How could you speak to me in such a way?” She pressed the tips of her fingers to her chest, but then gripped the back of his neck, pulling him in close and kissing his lips.

Just as he was about to get to her thighs to be even more thorough, his cell phone went off. Daniel was tempted to ignore it, but Amy had already started to pull away. Pulling out his cell phone, he saw it was a call from Nixon.

“Hey, man, what’s up?”

“You need to come to Flynn’s Café. That bad feeling is getting worse.”

“What happened?”

“Someone smashed in all the windows.”

Nixon hung up, and Daniel looked at Amy.

“What? What is it?” she asked.

“We need to go to the café. Someone has broken your windows.”

Chapter Nine

Amy stood in the café with the glass crunching beneath her feet, and she felt like bursting into tears. The fair was less than a week away. There was no way she could open the café with boarded-up windows. Between the wrong deliveries, and now the windows, Amy didn’t like this sick feeling she was getting.

Martha stepped into the café and then moved toward her, putting her hands on her shoulders.

“I’m fine,” Amy said.

“You’re not fine, and lying about it is not going to do you any good,” Martha said.

Amy sighed and leaned back toward the older woman. “I’m sorry. I just … I don’t get it. Who would do this?” She shook her head. There was no way it could be a local. She didn’t think anyone in town would want to hurt her business so badly.

Martha spun her around and hugged her close. “I’ve got you. I know it doesn’t seem like it right now, but I promise you, it’s going to be all right.”

Amy wrapped her arms around the older woman and tried not to cry. The tears, though, seemed to want to fall regardless. She didn’t sob, just cried. She hadn’t cried since her grandparents died.

At the sound of the door opening and the panting, Amy pulled out of Martha’s arms and saw Penelope rushing toward her. Her friend was dressed in a pair of shorts and a bikini top.

“I came as soon as I heard.”

“You heard?”

“Everyone heard.” Penelope rushed toward her and pulled her into a hug, doing so tightly. Seconds passed and then Penelope loosened her hold and cupped her face. “Oh, honey, don’t cry. Please don’t cry.”

“I’m not crying.”

But, Penelope wiped away the tears for her.

“I mean, I don’t mean to cry. They’re just falling as if they have a mind of their own.”
