“Hold on a sec.” She holds a finger up at me.
Sid reaches for her phone and answers it. I watch her face as she listens. My body starts to coil, I don’t like the feeling I’m getting. My phone dings, pulling my attention.
“Shit.”
I curse under my breath at the text David just sent. He could have sent this shit sooner. Sid is being ambushed. This is exactly the shit I don’t need right now.
Sidney
I’m totally confused, but Marnita’s voice is so excited coming through the phone. I don’t have the heart to interrupt and tell her I have no idea what the hell she’s talking about. I look over at Clayton and he looks pissed off.
The softness and vulnerability he displayed only moments ago is gone. I get the feeling this call has something to do with his change in mood.
I honestly haven’t wrapped my mind around all of what he has told me. I can’t believe Clooney would do that to him. Not the loving father I’ve gotten to know.
I didn’t want to upset Clay by telling him that. I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened firsthand.
However, I know one thing, he’d never be able to use me against Clayton. Not after the way I’ve fallen for this man.
“I still can’t believe you’re getting married. This is such an honor that you want me to come in and remodel the place for you. The pictures your fiancé sent with his assistant are amazing. I don’t know what you need me for,” she bubbles through the line, pulling me from my thoughts.
“Thank you so much for thinking of me as a bridesmaid. Between the wedding and the remodel, I’ll get so much time to catch up with you. How’s Chloe? You know we’re going to throw you an amazing bachelorette party, right?
“Oh, I looked up your fiancé. Girl, where did you find him? There are pictures of you two all over the net, funny I couldn’t find much before you, but—”
“Marnita,” I call, finally interrupting her.
“Oh, shit, I’m sorry. I’m just so excited. I’m on his jet,” she squeals. She lowers her voice to whisper, “Oh, and David is fine as hell.”
I burst into laughter. I love this girl. When she’s excited, it shows. If she’s pissed, she’s silent as a lamb. I don’t know what the hell is going on, but I’ll admit I’m excited just from listening to her.
However, I dip my brows as her words sink in. David isn’t Clay’s assistant. His executive assistant’s name is Levi. David is his head of security. The last time I saw David was sometime last night before we left the gala. I had wondered where he was when we left.
Clayton stands, leaning over to kiss my forehead. I purse my lips, watching as he leaves the room. This isn’t over, he’s going to explain what this is all about.
“Honey, we’ll get into details when you get here. I have to get a few things done before you arrive,” I say into the phone.
“Love you, honey. Thanks so much for all of this,” she replies.
I toss the covers off, throwing my legs over the edge of the bed. When I go to stand, my legs buckle. I fall right into the nightstand, knocking the vase of flowers Clay had placed there yesterday to the floor.
Clay thunders back up the stairs as I sit, stunned. I can’t help it, I burst into laughter. My legs giving out, my bewildered reaction, the wild look on Clayton’s face, I can’t hold it in. I laugh so hard tears stream down my face.
Clayton folds his arms across his chest, shaking his head at me, a small smile on the corners of his lips. That’s until I go to move, and he sees the glass at my feet. He’s in motion, moving to me to scoop me up into his arms.
“You need to soak. I’ll clean this up and make your lunch,” he murmurs.
“Lunch.” I whip my head back. “What time is it?”
“A little past noon.”
“I really slept that long?” I say in disbelief.
“Mm, you had a very vigorous night.” His smile returns.
“What’s going on?” I cut through the small talk, wanting answers.
He sighs, placing me on the side of the tub. He doesn’t reply as he starts the water and retrieves my favorite bubble bath. I shift a little, the soreness in my ass biting a bit.
“The night you moved in, I had my guys go to your apartment. I told you before, your place was bugged. They were listening in on your conversations. I had your friend watched as a precaution.
“Anyone you mentioned or talked to became a target. Chloe has been away. Ally has been here in New York under my watch and security, like you. I’ve had eyes on Marnita’s situation. She’s become a target since they haven’t been able to get to you,” he sighs, reaching to shut off the water.
