The words are barely out of my mouth when Julius pounds the emergency button with his fist, and my whole world starts to spin when I see him throw himself out of the speeding train as soon as the doors open.
The telltale sound of train wheels running over flesh and bones follows, and my whole world goes black.
WHEN I OPEN MY EYES again, I'm in Michalis' arms, and an evening breeze makes me shiver against his chest while police sirens wail endlessly around us.
The look on his handsome face is grim, and his frosted lavender eyes somber. I start to ask what's wrong when everything comes flashing back, and his arms tighten around me when he feels my body jerk.
"Julius..." It hurts to say his name, for so many reasons.
"Dead."
I had a feeling he would be. And there had been times, when I was at my weakest and angriest, that I had wished he would be. But now that he was dead, I could feel nothing at all, and I don't think it's because of shock.
Death is not justice.
I've heard someone say this before, and I know now that it's true.
"Catalina..."
His accent is so much thicker than usual, and the tension that underscores his voice only makes it more prominent.
"I think I know what you are now—-"
"A magnet for pervs?" I joke weakly, but he doesn't smile back.
"And you are something that isn't supposed to exist."
"Like a werewolf?" I deadpan.
"Like a succubus." Michalis bites the words out between clenched teeth, and my heart stops beating because everyone in Night Bloom knows that our King always, and I mean always means what he says.
