“It’s okay. We just got caught up in the moment.” In the kissing, the touching, the rain… But now the moment is gone.
“Wait here,” he says, climbing off the bed. “Let me get something to clean that off with.” He quickly returns with a warm washcloth and wipes the stickiness off my stomach.
“Would it be okay if I used your bathroom?” I ask, glancing at the clock and seeing that I won’t have enough time to go home before I have to pick up Kendall from school.
“Yeah. There’s two. Use this one, and I’ll use the other.” He hovers over me and kisses me softly. “Once you’re dressed, be prepared for me to convince you to have dinner with me.”
Without a word, I grab my clothes and close the door behind me. I drop onto the toilet and go pee, while I’m pulling my shirt over my head and my pants up my legs. When I’m done, I look at myself in the mirror and notice my mascara is running from the rain. I quickly wipe under my eyes and fix my hair the best I can and then head back out, snatching my bag up as I walk past the bed and out to the living room. My eyes scan the area, and when I don’t see Easton, figuring he’s still in the other bathroom, I slip out of the hotel room. There’s no way I’m waiting around for him to convince me of anything.
I meant what I said: I can’t be distracted.
CHAPTER TWO
SOPHIA
A Little Over a Month Later
“You’re what?” Naomi shrieks.
“Shh… keep it down. Kendall is sleeping.” My girl works hard at school and when she gets home, she’s wiped out and in need of a little power nap. After she has a snack, she always passes out for about an hour or so. And once she wakes up, we’ll tackle her homework.
“I just don’t understand how…”
“Well, when a man and a woman—”
“Stop being a smartass, bitch!” Naomi playfully slaps my arm. “I didn’t even know you were having sex! And why the hell aren’t you on birth control?”
“Because I’m not having sex.”
She quirks a brow up and her eyes dart to my belly. “Could’ve fooled me.”
“Well, I wasn’t!” I huff. “Until I did…It was only one time.” I go about telling her the details. The deadly bee. How I saved his life. How the photographer approached us… “I was horny,” I tell her in my defense. “And he was there.”
“And now your ass is knocked up.”
“He pulled out,” I groan, dropping my head into my hands. A few days ago, I woke up feeling sick. I thought it was all the candy I ate, since I’ve been scarfing that shit down since Halloween, but when the sickness continued on for several days, I knew something was wrong.
“I can’t believe this happened. I should’ve known better. Of course the best sex of my life ends with me knocked up. Now I’m going to have two babies by two different guys.” I look up at Naomi. “There’s gotta be a trashy reality show with this plot somewhere.”
Naomi laughs. “You should really get on birth control. It’s obvious you’re very fertile.”
I hit her with a hard stare. “Sure, I’ll get on birth control… after I have this baby.”
She covers her mouth with her hand to hide her smile. “Good idea.”
I close my eyes and groan, stressed out, sick to my stomach, and exhausted. We literally had sex one time and he pulled out. I went to the doctor the following week and requested to be checked for STDs, but it must’ve been too soon to show up on the tests that I’m pregnant.
“What are you going to do?” Naomi asks, her tone turning serious.
I sigh and flop back, my head hitting the back of the couch. “Have the baby…”
“I know that, but are you going to try to find the baby’s father? You know, if he’s still alive…” She side-eyes me, but I ignore her comment, as well as the look she’s giving me. We don’t talk about Kendall’s lack of a dad ever.
“And how would you expect me to find him? All I know is that his name is Easton and that a little over a month ago he was staying at The Penthouse.”
“Maybe he’s still there…”
“Yeah, maybe.” Although I’m not sure why someone would stay at The Penthouse for over a month, or who in their right mind could afford to… “Would you mind watching Kendall while I go over there?”
“Of course not.”
A little while later, I’m strolling through the lobby of The Penthouse, a luxurious hotel situated in front of Bryant Park.
When the receptionist calls me over, asking if I’m here to check in, I shake my head. “I’m actually looking for someone who was staying here. I’m wondering if maybe he’s still here. His name is Easton, and he was staying in room…” Shit, I don’t remember his room number, or the floor he was on, or anyfuckingthing other than how good of a kisser he was and how delicious his dick felt inside me.
