He produced flowers from behind his back, and I found myself instantly liking the guy. “How sweet of you. Come on in—everyone’s in the kitchen.”
Matt followed me into the kitchen. I was going to have a long talk with my husband about not telling me who he’d invited over for dinner.
“Lucas, Matt’s arrived.”
“Hey, Matt,” Shawn said as he walked over and shook his hand. “Lucas didn’t mention you’d be here!”
Matt smiled and looked at Lucas who just shrugged. When Matt turned to me with a worried expression, I did the only thing I could do to keep him from feeling uncomfortable. “He told me, don’t worry.”
Kristin snort-laughed then cleared her throat. Shawn introduced Kristin to Matt.
“I don’t remember you from school,” Kristin stated.
Matt laughed. “I get that a lot. I went to a private school and then we moved to Maine when I was in the seventh grade.”
“Oh, okay. What brought you back to Salem?”
I pulled out a vase, put the flowers in it, and walked into the dining room to set them on the table. Sarah stood there with a glare on her face.
“Don’t look at me like that!” I said. “I had no idea Lucas asked him over for dinner.”
Crossing her arms over her chest, she shot daggers past me at either Lucas or Matt. I wasn’t sure which one she was currently madder at.
“I’m leaving!” Sarah hissed.
“You are not. Just give the guy another chance, Sarah.”
“Why! He was rude to me, and he clearly doesn’t like me.”
I let out a small bark of laughter. “Please, the sexual tension between the two of you is off the charts.”
Her mouth dropped open. “I’m sorry?”
Leaning in, I lowered my voice. “He was your first kiss, huh?”
She blushed, her cheeks turning pink.
“You liked him!”
She blinked rapidly at me. “When I was thirteen, Hollie!”
I rolled my eyes, grabbed her hand, and pulled her back toward the kitchen. We walked in just as Matt was finishing telling Kristin why he’d moved back to Salem.
“Sarah?” Matt said, his voice a mix of happiness and displeasure.
With a jerk of her head, Sarah replied with a cold, “Matt.”
All eyes bounced between my sister and Matt. Clearing my throat, I said, “Lucas, Matt brought a bottle of wine. Why don’t you have everyone go take a seat and pour them a glass while I get everything ready?”
As everyone made their way out of the kitchen, I took hold of Kristin and pulled her to me. In a low voice, I said, “We need to talk.”
“About?” she asked, one brow raised in question.
“I need your help with a spell.”
Her eyes lit up. “If it’s to get Matt and Sarah together, I’m all over it!”
“No!” I said, angry with myself that I hadn’t made that spell yet. “It’s for Lucas.”
Kristin took a step back. “The last spell you put on him nearly killed him!”
“I’m a better witch now!” I said as I turned to take the bread out of the oven.
Folding her arms over her chest, she scoffed. “Oh, from all the years of practice. Oh wait, it hasn’t even been a year yet.”
I gave her a slight push toward the dining room. “Go make sure Matt and Sarah don’t kill each other.”
She pouted. “You really are no fun now that you’re pregnant.”
Pointing to the dining room, I growled, “Kristin!”
She lifted her hands in surrender. “Fine. But I don’t know when I became the babysitter around here.”
Lucas
Dinner was lovely. Well, it was lovely as long as Matt and Sarah ignored each other. Lucas still seemed a bit off kilter, though. I couldn’t believe what had happened to him, and I was dying to talk to Lucy about it. I’d sent her a voice text earlier when I’d left the table with the excuse of needing to use the bathroom.
I knew some witches had precognitions—the ability to see into the future. But it usually only lasted for a few seconds. Sarah had it, there was no doubt about that. But could a witch travel back in time?
Glancing up, I saw Lucy at the back door of my house. She smiled, and I nearly dropped the dessert I was about to bring out to everyone. I rushed over to her. “Give me one second!”
Softly shutting the door, I made my way to the dining room and motioned for Kristin to come into the kitchen. She rose and quickly made her way toward me.
“What’s up?”
Handing her the dessert, I said, “I need you to serve this and tell everyone I had to go to the bathroom.”
Her brow rose. “Again?”
“I’m pregnant, Kristin. I have to pee a lot.”
She shot me a look that said I was full of bullshit. “And the fact that Lucy is waiting for you outside has nothing to do with this?”
My eyes widened. “Omg! Your gifts are growing stronger!”
She shook her head. “Not really; I can see her pacing on the back porch.”
